About Tinubu

Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu, a distinguished Nigerian politician, has been serving as the 16th President of Nigeria since 2023.

He was born on March 29, 1952, in Lagos, Nigeria.

Ahmed pursued his primary education at St. John’s Primary School, Aroloya, Lagos, before attending Children Home School in Ibadan.

He then proceeded to the United States, where he completed his undergraduate studies at Richard J. Daley College in Chicago and later at Chicago State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 1979.

His career spans multiple roles, including Governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and Senator for Lagos West in the Third Republic.

Tinubu’s journey in Nigerian politics began upon his return to the country in the early 1990s.

He initially worked as an accountant for Mobil Nigeria before making his foray into politics as a senatorial candidate for Lagos West in 1992.

The dissolution of the Senate by General Sani Abacha in 1993 marked a turning point, as Tinubu transitioned into an activist role, championing democracy through the National Democratic Coalition movement.

His subsequent victories in the Lagos State gubernatorial elections as a member of the Alliance for Democracy cemented his position as a key figure in Nigerian politics.

Exile and return

Governor of Lagos State (1999–2007)

Tinubu’s governorship was characterized by significant infrastructure development, including road construction, aimed at meeting the needs of Lagos State’s expanding population.

He secured re-election in 2003, but his tenure was marked by tensions with the Olusegun Obasanjo-controlled federal government and PDP leaders.

All Progressives Congress

In 2014, Bola Tinubu worked with General Muhammadu Buhari, the leader of the CPC faction of the APC, for the presidential election.

Although Tinubu initially sought to become Buhari’s running mate, he eventually conceded the position to Yemi Osibanjo.

Buhari’s subsequent victory in 2015 marked a significant milestone, ending the PDP’s 16-year rule and making him the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president.

2023 presidential election

On January 10, 2022, Bola Tinubu formally announced his presidential candidacy.

He went on to win the All Progressives Congress (APC) party convention vote on June 8, 2022, securing 1,271 votes.

Tinubu defeated Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and Rotimi Amaechi, who garnered 235 and 316 votes, respectively.

Ultimately, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Tinubu the winner of the 2023 presidential election on March 1, 2023, with 8,794,726 votes.
