2027: ADC unveils 28 governorship candidates

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has unveiled its governorship and deputy governorship candidates for the 2027 general elections in 28 states.

The party announced the candidates in a statement on Friday, describing them as part of its effort to provide Nigerians with credible leadership and a “real alternative” in the elections.

Among the notable candidates are Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour in Lagos, Isa Mohammed Ashiru in Kaduna, Great Ogboru in Delta, Senator Ahmad Babba Kaita in Katsina and Abubakar Malami in Kebbi.

The ADC also fielded candidates in states including Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Adamawa, Kano, Oyo, Ogun, Plateau and Zamfara.

“Nobody Will Intimidate Us Again at the Polling Unit” — Peter Obi Fires Warning Ahead of 2027 Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has delivered a strong message ahead of the 2027 general election, declaring that Nigerians will no longer allow themselves to be intimidated at polling units. Speaking during a town hall meeting in Rivers State, Obi expressed deep concern over what he described as the alarming decline of several key sectors of the Nigerian economy, using the country’s shipping and aviation industries as examples of what he believes has gone wrong over the years. Obi recalled that Nigeria’s National Shipping Line had six vessels in 1959 and increased its fleet to eight vessels by 1961, noting that the country once had a functioning maritime presence. According to him, Nigeria has now lost that capacity, leaving the country without a national shipping fleet. He also compared Nigeria’s aviation history with the growth of Emirates Airlines. Obi noted that when Emirates began operations in 1985, it reportedly started with two leased aircraft, while Nigeria at the time had more than 20 aircraft. He contrasted that history with the present situation, arguing that Emirates has grown into a major global airline with a fleet of hundreds of aircraft, while Nigeria’s national carrier situation has suffered a dramatic decline. The former governor also raised concerns about the state of Nigeria’s healthcare system, arguing that the difficulties faced by citizens in accessing quality medical care have contributed to a growing tendency among some Nigerians to seek spiritual intervention when they are seriously ill rather than relying solely on hospitals. However, Obi’s remarks took a particularly political turn as he addressed the 2027 elections, delivering what supporters may see as a direct warning to those who could attempt to manipulate the electoral process. He declared: “Coming 2027 election, nobody will intimidate us again at the polling unit. Forget all these noises.” Obi also raised concerns about the possible manipulation or malfunction of the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV), suggesting that Nigerians and election stakeholders must be prepared to ensure that technological challenges do not undermine the credibility of the electoral process. According to Obi, “They will try to manipulate the IREV, but it won’t be easy this time around.” He further stated that there would be multiple ways of ensuring that election results can still be properly captured and verified, declaring: “There will be so many IREVs; if their own doesn’t work, our own will work.” He went on to make a striking remark about technological glitches, saying that if the system develops problems, Nigerians would provide an alternative system that works, adding that “by allowing them to continue, the glitches will glitch our lives.” The comments come as political parties, candidates, supporters and electoral stakeholders gradually position themselves ahead of the 2027 Nigerian general elections, which are expected to generate intense political competition. Obi’s statement about intimidation at polling units is particularly significant in a country where concerns over electoral violence, voter suppression, result transmission, technology and the credibility of election outcomes have remained major issues in public debate.
