Eight lawmakers in the Zamfara State House of Assembly have reversed their decision to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC) and announced plans to return to the party following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.
The lawmakers met with Tinubu behind closed doors at the Presidential Villa on Monday, October 19, 2026, in a move aimed at resolving the internal crisis rocking the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The delegation was led by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, alongside Aminu Jaji, a member of the House of Representatives representing Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji Federal Constituency.
The lawmakers are Aliyu Kagara of Talata Mafara South, Ibrahim Tukur of Bakura, Faruk Dosara of Maradun I, Bashir Masama of Bukkuyum North, Muktaru Kaura of Kaura North, Nasiru Abdullahi of Maru North, Bashar Bello of Bungudu West and Bashar Aliyu of Gummi I.
The lawmakers had earlier announced their resignation from the APC, citing internal party disagreements, worsening insecurity in rural communities and alleged failure to pay some of their allowances and entitlements.
Their departure had fuelled speculation that they would join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The lawmakers had also been involved in a prolonged dispute with the leadership of the state assembly. They were suspended after allegedly attempting to remove the Speaker.
However, they said their grievances were being addressed through a reconciliation process led by Matawalle with President Tinubu’s intervention.
Following the meeting, the lawmakers pledged to work towards the growth of the APC and its victory in the 2027 election.
Despite the reported reconciliation, one of the lawmakers, Nasiru Abdullahi, who represents Maru North, had already been screened to contest for his state assembly seat under the ADC.
His political status raises questions about how the latest development could affect his plans ahead of the next election.
Zamfara remains a key political battleground ahead of the 2027 elections, with persistent divisions among influential APC figures.
The party has faced factional tensions involving Matawalle, former governor Abdul’aziz Yari and federal lawmaker Aminu Jaji.
Governor Dauda Lawal, who won the 2023 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has also been a major figure in the state’s political landscape.
Tinubu’s intervention is expected to support efforts to reconcile aggrieved party members and strengthen the APC’s position ahead of the 2027 polls.
