ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Independent National Electoral Commission has warned politicians and its officials against tampering with votes in the 2027 elections. The commission said offenders risk imprisonment and fines.
The warning was issued on Wednesday by the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu. He spoke at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja.
The Warning
Yakubu said the commission will not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice. He said anyone caught tampering with votes will face the full weight of the law.
“We are committed to free, fair, and credible elections. We will not allow anyone to undermine the integrity of the process,” Yakubu stated.
He said the commission has strengthened its systems to prevent vote tampering. He also said it will prosecute offenders.
Offences and Penalties
The INEC chairman outlined the offences. These include vote-buying, ballot snatching, and manipulation of results.
He said offenders could face imprisonment or fines. He did not specify the exact penalties. But he said they would be severe.
“We have the legal framework to prosecute offenders. We will not hesitate to use it,” he said.
Call for Collaboration
Yakubu called for collaboration among stakeholders. He urged political parties, security agencies, and civil society organisations to support the commission.
He said the success of the 2027 elections depends on the collective effort of all stakeholders.
“We cannot do it alone. We need the support of everyone. Together, we can deliver credible elections,” he said.
What This Means
The warning is a clear message to politicians and officials. It shows that the commission is serious about protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
The 2027 elections are critical for Nigeria’s democracy. Free and fair elections are essential for stability and development.
What Happens Next
INEC will continue to prepare for the elections. It will also intensify voter education and sensitisation.
For now, the commission has urged voters to report any cases of vote tampering. It said such reports will be treated with confidentiality.
