Former Kano State governor and leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has unveiled his son, Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, as the deputy governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The announcement was confirmed on Monday by Habibu Mohammad, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

Mustapha will run alongside Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, a longtime political ally of Kwankwaso, on the party’s governorship ticket in Kano State.

Before entering the race, Mustapha served as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

He later resigned alongside several cabinet members during a period of political realignment that followed Yusuf’s move to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Gwarzo, who previously held the position of deputy governor in Kano, also stepped down amid growing political tensions in the state.

Although he cited personal reasons for his resignation, his tenure was marked by allegations of financial misconduct raised by the Kano State House of Assembly.

The Kwankwasiyya Movement said the choice of candidates forms part of its broader strategy to regain political control of Kano State from the APC in the 2027 elections.

According to the movement, efforts are already underway to strengthen party structures and expand grassroots support across the state as preparations for the next electoral cycle gather momentum.

With the unveiling of Mustapha Kwankwaso, the NDC has now signalled its intention to field a ticket that combines established political figures with younger faces as it seeks to challenge the APC’s hold on Kano.
