Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu, calling on his supporters and opposition leaders nationwide to unite under the party to “rescue Nigeria from poverty, disunity, and democratic decline.”

Obi emphasized that his move is guided by patriotism and national interest, urging his followers to form a broad coalition within the ADC. His National Coordinator, Dr Yunusa Tanko, stated that the primary aim of joining the party is to secure its 2027 presidential ticket, adding that efforts are underway to integrate millions of members of the Obidient Movement into the ADC.

However, former ADC National Chairman, Ralph Nwosu, warned that winning the ticket will not be easy, as the party has many senior figures who will also vie for the position. Nwosu stressed that the ADC operates through elections, lobbying, and internal negotiation, noting that Obi has long been involved in the party’s formation.

Despite the challenges, Nwosu said the party’s real strength lies with the people, highlighting popular dissatisfaction with the current administration and predicting that citizens will play a decisive role in upcoming elections.

At his defection, Obi criticized the Tinubu administration for economic mismanagement, state capture, and erosion of democratic values, echoing Nwosu’s assessment that defeating the current government is achievable due to widespread public discontent.
