Former Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is set to make his first return to the Etihad Stadium since leaving the club, with the Spaniard expected to attend City’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain on October 14.

Guardiola’s return will mark the first time he has been back at the stadium since ending his hugely successful 10-year spell as Manchester City’s manager at the end of last season. His expected appearance comes at a particularly significant moment for the club, which is dealing with the fallout from an independent commission’s findings over alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations.

According to current reports, Guardiola intends to watch City take on reigning European champions Paris Saint-Germain from the stands. The visit is widely seen as another demonstration of his continued support for the club, its leadership and the people he worked with during his decade in Manchester.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich coach has remained closely connected to City despite stepping down from the managerial position. Manchester City announced before his departure that Guardiola would continue his relationship with the City Football Group as a global ambassador.

His time in charge transformed the club into one of the dominant forces in English and European football. Guardiola won six Premier League titles, including four consecutive championships, as well as three FA Cups, five League Cups and City’s first Champions League trophy in 2023. He left after collecting 20 major trophies during his decade in charge.

Guardiola’s return is also taking place against the backdrop of City’s ongoing legal battle over the Premier League’s financial regulations case.

An independent commission recently found Manchester City guilty of numerous charges relating to alleged financial-rule breaches covering the period between the 2009/10 and 2017/18 seasons. City have rejected the findings and lodged an appeal, meaning the matter remains unresolved.

Guardiola has made his position clear since the verdict. In a message to City supporters, he reaffirmed his backing for the club’s owners, chairman, executives, players, staff and supporters, insisting that he remained behind the club during the difficult period.

His decision to attend the PSG match therefore carries significance beyond a former manager simply watching his old team.

It will be Guardiola’s first opportunity to sit inside the stadium since leaving a club where he spent the longest managerial spell of his career. It will also place him back in front of supporters who witnessed the most successful period in Manchester City’s history.

For the current City side, however, the focus will ultimately be on the pitch.

Before welcoming PSG to Manchester, Enzo Maresca’s team are scheduled to travel to Anfield to face Liverpool in the Premier League on October 11. City will then return home for the high-profile Champions League fixture against PSG three days later.

The PSG encounter will be one of the biggest fixtures of the early Champions League campaign, with both clubs carrying strong ambitions in Europe. City’s opening league-phase match ended in a 2-0 victory over Porto, while PSG also began their campaign with an emphatic win.

Guardiola’s presence is likely to add another layer of attention to an already important night.

For City supporters, it will be a rare chance to see the man who delivered the club’s first Champions League title and helped establish an era of unprecedented domestic success back inside the Etihad.

For Guardiola himself, the occasion will represent a return to a stadium that was his professional home for a decade.

Although he will no longer occupy the technical area, his expected appearance against PSG is likely to underline that his relationship with Manchester City did not end when he left the manager’s seat.
