Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu opened his goal account for the 2026/27 season as Trabzonspor secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Samsunspor in the Turkish Süper Lig on Saturday.
The 23-year-old centre-back scored Trabzonspor’s second goal in the Black Sea derby, helping his side claim an important away victory at Samsun 19 Mayıs Stadium.
Trabzonspor delivered an impressive first-half performance, scoring three times before the interval to take control of the encounter and leave their hosts with a difficult task in the second half.
Ernest Muçi opened the scoring in the 28th minute, finishing from inside the penalty area to give the visitors the advantage.
Nwaiwu doubled Trabzonspor’s lead 10 minutes later after Muçi’s effort was not held by Samsunspor goalkeeper Okan Kocuk. The Nigerian defender reacted quickly to the loose ball and followed up to find the net, marking his first goal of the campaign.
The goal highlighted Nwaiwu’s ability to contribute offensively despite his primary responsibilities in central defence. His awareness inside the penalty area proved valuable as Trabzonspor capitalised on the goalkeeper’s inability to secure the initial attempt.
Franculino Djú completed the first-half scoring in the 40th minute, extending Trabzonspor’s advantage to 3-0 and putting the visitors in a commanding position before the break.
Djú’s goal added to an already impressive attacking display from Trabzonspor, who demonstrated their effectiveness in front of goal while keeping Samsunspor under pressure.
The result continued Trabzonspor’s strong run of performances and provided another encouraging moment for Nwaiwu, whose influence has grown since joining the Turkish club earlier in the year.
The Nigerian defender also produced an impressive display at the other end of the pitch. He recorded four tackles, four interceptions and four clearances, demonstrating his contribution to the team’s defensive organisation.
Nwaiwu won three of his four ground duels and completed 85 per cent of his passes, underlining his effectiveness in possession and his ability to compete in defensive situations.
His performance earned him a rating of 8.7, reflecting an influential outing in which he combined defensive reliability with a crucial contribution to the attack.
The defender also avoided a suspension that could have affected Trabzonspor’s upcoming fixture against Beşiktaş on Monday, October 19.
Nwaiwu had received yellow cards in three consecutive league matches against Başakşehir, Amed SK and Gençlerbirliği. Another booking against Samsunspor would have ruled him out of the next league encounter.
His ability to complete the match without another caution means he remains available for selection ahead of the challenging fixture.
Nwaiwu joined Trabzonspor from Austrian club Wolfsberger AC in January 2026 in a transfer reported to be worth €5.5 million.
He quickly became part of the club’s plans and helped Trabzonspor finish third in the Turkish Süper Lig, win the Turkish Cup and qualify for the UEFA Europa League during the previous campaign.
His performances also attracted attention from clubs outside Turkey, with English Premier League side Fulham reportedly having two bids for the Nigerian defender rejected during the summer transfer window.
At international level, Nwaiwu received his first Nigeria senior-team call-up in March 2026 after replacing the injured Calvin Bassey.
He subsequently made his Super Eagles debut as a second-half substitute in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over Iran, taking an important step in his international career.
The defender was also included in Nigeria’s matchday squads for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in September, although he did not feature in either match.
His latest performance for Trabzonspor provides another opportunity to strengthen his case for regular involvement with the national team.
For the Turkish club, Nwaiwu’s growing contribution offers encouragement as the season progresses. While his main responsibility remains preventing opposition attacks, his goal against Samsunspor demonstrated the additional value he can provide during attacking situations.
Trabzonspor will now turn their attention to their upcoming league fixture against Beşiktaş, where they will hope to maintain their momentum.
For Nwaiwu, the immediate objective will be to build on his impressive performance, maintain his defensive consistency and continue contributing to Trabzonspor’s ambitions in domestic and European competitions.
The Nigerian defender’s first goal of the campaign may prove to be an important personal milestone, but his all-round performance against Samsunspor showed why his contribution extends well beyond finding the net.
