Unai Simón has reached another remarkable milestone in his career after being named the world’s best goalkeeper at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony, capping an unforgettable year in which he helped Spain win the FIFA World Cup and collected the tournament’s Golden Glove award.

The Athletic Club goalkeeper received the prestigious Yashin Trophy in London on Monday, October 26, following a series of outstanding performances that established him among the leading goalkeepers in world football.

For Simón, the award represents more than individual recognition. It is a reward for years of hard work, consistency and dedication, culminating in a season that has brought him some of the biggest honours available in the game.

His World Cup campaign was particularly impressive. Simón played a crucial role in Spain’s journey to their second world title, conceding just one goal across eight matches and keeping seven clean sheets.

Spain eventually defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final on July 19, with Simón’s performances throughout the tournament helping establish the defensive foundation behind the team’s success.

He also set a new World Cup record by going 650 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal, surpassing the previous mark held by Italy’s Walter Zenga.

The achievement earned him the Golden Glove as the tournament’s outstanding goalkeeper, providing further evidence of his importance to Spain’s successful campaign.

However, Simón’s journey to the top has been built over several years rather than a single tournament.

The goalkeeper joined Athletic Club’s youth academy, Lezama, as a teenager and gradually worked his way through the club’s development system before making his first-team debut in 2018.

His loyalty to the Basque club has remained a defining feature of his career. While many players seek opportunities elsewhere to compete for major honours, Simón has continued to develop at Athletic Club, becoming one of the team’s most important figures.

His achievements with Spain have further strengthened his reputation. He was part of the national team that won the UEFA Nations League in 2023 and the European Championship in 2024 before completing the remarkable sequence with the 2026 World Cup triumph.

The Yashin Trophy also represents redemption of sorts after Simón finished second in the voting in 2024, behind Argentina’s Emiliano Martínez.

This time, the Spanish international went one step further to claim the award.

Before the ceremony, Simón spoke about the significance of reaching such a stage in his career, admitting that becoming one of the world’s leading goalkeepers was not something he had imagined as a child.

He described his nomination as a source of pride and acknowledged the quality of the other contenders, including Spanish compatriots David Raya and Joan García.

Simón also expressed satisfaction with the strength of Spanish goalkeeping, recognising the quality of the country’s representatives among the nominees.

His comments reflected a goalkeeper who appreciates the importance of individual recognition but remains grounded in the collective achievements of his team.

At Athletic Club, his development has been shaped by patience, discipline and a strong connection with the club’s identity. His performances for Spain have now brought that work to an international audience, with the World Cup and Yashin Trophy placing him among the most celebrated goalkeepers of the year.

The award also adds another distinction to an already impressive career that includes the 2020 Spanish Super Cup and the 2024 Copa del Rey with Athletic Club.

For Spain, Simón’s success provides further recognition of a golden period for the national team, which has combined experienced players with emerging talents to achieve sustained success on the international stage.

For Athletic Club, it is a moment of enormous pride. One of their own has reached the summit of world football without abandoning the club that helped shape his career.

Simón’s 2026 campaign will be remembered for his composure under pressure, remarkable defensive consistency and contribution to Spain’s World Cup triumph.

Now, with the Golden Glove and Yashin Trophy secured, the 29-year-old has added another major achievement to his collection.

His journey is a reminder that behind every historic season lies years of preparation, perseverance and the determination to keep improving.
