From the Archives: Gov. Tinubu and Certificate Forgery – Sep 14, 1999

Sep 14, 1999 (From Postexpresswired.com) Date of Article: 09/14/99
Topic: Tinubu on His Toes
Full Text of Article: Allegations of perjury and forgery being levelled against Lagos Governor, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu have kept the State Chief Executive on his toes, reports OKEY NDIRIBE (Senior Correspondent).
HOW can Governor Bola Tinubu be innocent? retorted radical Lagos State Lawyer, Chief Gani Fawehinmi while responding to a question put to him by The Post Express.
He continued! “Available evidence shows he has committed crimes which are being downplayed by the press in this part of the country because of tribalism and sectionalism.”
Many journalists in Lagos agree with Fawehinmi. For several weeks it was common knowledge in most media houses in the former federal capital that petitions containing grave allegations levelled against the state chief executive were making the rounds. But there seemed to have been a grand conspiracy to ignore the petition authored by one Dr. Waliu Balogun a Lagos resident.
The petitioner had alleged that Tinubu did not attend University of Chicago as indicated in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) form 001 he filled when he contested the gubernatorial election in the state. It was also alleged that the Lagos governor lied in the affidavit he attached to the INEC form in which he declared that he lost his University of Chicago degree certificate while he was in exile between 1994 and 1998.
Tinubu was alleged to have claimed attending University of Chicago between 1972 and 1976 and Chicago State University between 1977 and 1979.
The petitioner had further alleged that Tinubu’s claim that he attended Government College, Ibadan was also false. He also picked holes in the governor’s claim in the INEC form that he was born in 1952 by alleging that he filled 1954 in the documents at his alma matter Chicago State University.
Tinubu was also accused of not participating in the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) scheme as required by law. His claim of being a chartered accountant was dismissed by the petitioner too.
As the petition made the rounds, Tinubu’s aides had dismissed the allegations with a wave of the hand claming it was, the handiwork of the governor’s political enemies.
However, all that changed when today a Kaduna based newspaper went ahead and published contents of the petition.
Against the background of the recent disgraceful removal of Alhaji Salisu Buhari as Speaker of the House of Representatives and the searchlight which was turned on the Senate President, Chief Evan Enwerem, Tinubu’s camp became alarmed.
Speaking to journalists at Abuja a few days later, Tinubu presented the original copy of his Chicago State University certificate. He dismissed all the allegations levelled against him and described them as “baseless, wicked and unfortunate.” The governor insisted he was a clean man with an immaculate record.
He also stated he was ready to face an independent panel of enquiry on the controversy, adding that no amount of smear campaign could divert him from his goal of serving Lagosians.
Shortly after the scandal broke out, it appeared the state House of Assembly wanted to wade into the matter. However, on August 31, the House majority leader, Mr. Farouk Adegboyega Oshodi said the House was yet to receive any petition against the governor. Nevertheless, the controversy generated by the petition became more interesting last week when Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi who represents Lagos West in the upperhouse, exonerated Tinubu of any wrongdoing, claiming instead that he (Afikuyomi) should be blamed for filling Tinubu’s INEC form wrongly. He claimed he filled the form on the governor’s behalf and admitted mistakes were made with regard to the actual schools Tinubu attended.
Said Afikuyomi: “I took part in the activities that brought Tinubu to the State House and therefore I know all that happened during the primaries and during the screening exercise at INEC.”
Continuing the Senator said: “I can tell you now with facts without any contradiction from any quarters, that the circumstances under which the INEC forms were filled were not normal circumstances.”
Afikuyomi explained there were lots of intra party crisis emanating from the party’s gubernatorial primaries in the state.
“Therefore that gave us less than 24 hours to fill the form and submit to INEC. And in the middle of all that, we also had lots of things to do in terms of campaigns, preparations, resolving crises at party meetings and reconciliation meetings, he said.
However, Afikuyomi’s explanation did not help Tinubu much. It could not explain the governor’s claim that he attended two universities whereas he attended only one. The Senator’s explanation could not rationalise why Tinubu also swore to an affidavit that he attended University of Chicago even when he did not.
Afikuyomi could not provide any reason why Tinubu’s name could not be found in the list of class one students in 1965 even as he had claimed that was the year he entered the college and spent only a brief period there.
The Post Express further learnt that already the old students association of Government College, Ibadan has dissociated itself from Tinubu as there were no records to show that he attended the school at all. A grand party which was initially planned by the old students of the school to celebrate the ascension of one of “their own” into the corridors of power was hurriedly cancelled when it was discovered nobody knew Tinubu during the period he claimed to have attended the school.
According to the Lagos governor’s curriculum vitae, he completed his secondary school education at Richard Daley College also in Chicago in 1971.
Another puzzle in the Tinubu saga is that he was alleged to have an NYSC discharged certificate numbered OY/FORN/82/9106 issued in 1993 when it was known that he did not serve in the scheme.
In yet another twist to the scandal, two Senators representing Lagos have dissociated themselves from the statements made by Afikuyomi in defending Tinubu.
Contrary to Afikuyomi’s claims that he was speaking on behalf of Lagos legislators at the National Assembly, Senators Wahab Dosumu and Sunday Ogunlewe dissociated themselves from Afikuyomi’s defence of Tinubu. Said they: “Afikuyomi did not speak on our behalf. He did not consult us before his press conference. At the appropriate time, our great party will speak on the matter.”
The positions expressed by the duo was confirmed last Thursday as the leadership of AD gathered at Oshogbo to urgently address the unfolding scandal.
Sources at the Alausa, Ikeja, secretariat of the Lagos State Government hinted last Thursday that Tinubu and other leaders of the party had been summoned to take an urgent decision on the issue.
Tinubu who was elected Senator in 1991 adopted to become AD’s governorship candidate in the state despite strong opposition to the move.
The state leadership of the party had insisted that Tinubu’s opponent in the primaries, Mr. Funsho Williams had won the party’s ticket.
Tinubu’s emergence as the state governor followed as the party swept the governorship polls in Lagos and other states in the South west last December.

I’m Not Desperate to Be President – Atiku

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said he is more interested in building a better Nigeria than in becoming president at all costs.
Atiku made this known on Saturday during an affirmation ceremony in Lagos for new defectors to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The event saw several political heavyweights from the PDP and Labour Party officially announce their defection to the ADC.
The former PDP candidate, who recently resigned from the party along with other opposition politicians, formally joined the ADC in what he described as a “movement for national renewal.”
Speaking at the event, Atiku said his focus was not personal ambition but the pursuit of a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Nigeria.
“Atiku Abubakar’s plan is to build a better Nigeria,” said Olateju, who spoke on behalf of Atiku.
“It’s not about him being president at all costs. It’s about having a government that can truly deliver for Nigerians.”
According to him, the ADC should not be seen merely as a political party but as a movement dedicated to national transformation.
“It’s no longer politics as usual. This is a new beginning for Nigeria, and that’s what Atiku is championing,” he added.
Atiku further noted that the removal of fuel subsidy and rising inflation have left many Nigerians struggling.
He stressed that only good leadership could deliver lasting solutions.
He also said the coalition was confident that God would use them to bring meaningful change to Nigeria.
On who would likely emerge as the ADC presidential candidate in 2027, Atiku insisted the choice would be left to party members.
“Whoever emerges through a free and fair contest, we will all support. We are not imposing anyone,” he said.
“The point is not Atiku for president at all costs, or Obi for president at all costs. The point is Nigeria.
Whoever picks the ticket will represent the collective voice and aspirations of the Nigerian people,” he added.
Prominent defectors present at the event included PDP Board of Trustees member Dr. Abimbola Ogunkelu; former Lagos PDP chairmen Chief Muritala Ashorobi and Retired Capt. Tunji Shelle; PDP Vice Chairman (Lagos Central); and former PDP Youth Leader Mr. Tai Benedict, among others.
They were received by top ADC leaders, including National Secretary Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Senator Kolawole Ogunwale, and Lagos State Chairman George Ashiru.

VIRAL VIDEO: Moment Yahaya Bello Orders Kogi State House Members to Sit on Floor, Gives Strict Directives

A viral video circulating on social media has captured former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello making newly elected State House of Assembly member, Hassan Shado, and his supporters sit on the floor during a meeting in Abuja.
The meeting took place at Bello’s residence on Monday, where he received members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to discuss party unity and responsibilities.
Shado, who won the Dekina-Okura II State Constituency by-election on August 16, was formally presented to the former governor.
INEC declared Shado the winner after he polled 55,073 votes, defeating Godwin Meliga of the PDP, who garnered 1,038 votes.
During the session, Bello emphasized that Shado must strictly obey the directives of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo in all legislative matters.
He drew his ear to stress the importance of cooperation, warning the lawmaker to align with Assembly decisions even when he did not fully understand them.
Bello said, “Go and cooperate with the Speaker and other members of the House of Assembly. Support Governor Ododo in everything that comes to the Assembly, even if you don’t understand it.”
Bello also reminded Shado that political victories are collective achievements.
He stated, “No candidate wins an election alone. Your people worked tirelessly from nomination to election day. Do not let them down.”
He urged inclusivity, consultation, and collective leadership, emphasizing that unity remains the key to APC’s continued success in Kogi State.
The former governor praised the people of Kogi East for demonstrating unity, which he said had been lacking in the past.
He further expressed confidence that APC would retain all major political positions in upcoming elections, declaring, “Our President, Bola Tinubu, will be re-elected.
Governor Ododo will be re-elected. All our candidates will continue to win on our great party’s platform.”
Bello’s post-governorship period has been marked by controversy.
The EFCC accused him of diverting over N110 billion from Kogi State coffers during his tenure.
He evaded multiple court summons and even a failed arrest in Abuja that led to a shootout. Ultimately, Bello surrendered to the EFCC on November 26, 2024, after months of avoiding legal proceedings.
Despite his legal troubles, Bello maintains influence over APC lawmakers in Kogi and continues to assert political authority, as shown in the recent video with Shado.

2027: ADC Coalition Deceiving Nigerians – Baba-Ahmed

The 2023 Labour Party (LP) vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has warned Nigerians that the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is giving false hope about rescuing the country from underdevelopment.
“They are deceiving us,” Baba-Ahmed said during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday.
Baba-Ahmed, who ran alongside Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election won by Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) expressed his willingness to be Obi’s running mate in the 2027 presidential election.
Although Obi has shown interest in the 2027 race and is aligning with ADC coalition figures such as David Mark, Atiku Abubakar, Nasir el-Rufai, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola, Baba-Ahmed stressed that he wants Obi to remain in the Labour Party and contest as its presidential candidate.
“I’m in the Labour Party. I’m a Peter Obi man. I still want Peter Obi to come back to the Labour Party and contest the 2027 election,” Baba-Ahmed stated.
When asked about his plans for the 2027 race, Baba-Ahmed confirmed his readiness to serve as a running mate for like-minded leaders committed to restoring Nigeria.
“If Nigeria is still around and there is an electoral system to follow, my love for Nigeria is undying.
I would appropriately associate with groups and individuals aligned with restoring the nation,” he said.
Baba-Ahmed also revealed two potential leaders he would consider deputising, with Peter Obi being his primary choice. “The first one has not said anything.
The second one is Peter Obi. I’m always with Peter Obi until he decides not to,” he added.

Tinubu Secures Fresh $238m Loan from Japan

Nigeria has secured a $238 million loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to support the expansion and modernization of the national power grid.
The deal, confirmed during engagements at the ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan, reflects a strategic shift towards implementation-driven energy development.
President Bola Tinubu highlighted that Nigeria’s participation at TICAD9 focused on concrete, outcome-oriented partnerships rather than ceremonial diplomacy.
“We are moving from planning to implementation, from agreements to delivery, and from promises to measurable results,” he said.
Details of the JICA Loan Project
The $238 million loan, supported by a Federal Executive Council counterpart funding of ₦19,083,192,805.30, will finance significant upgrades to Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure.
Key components of the project include:
Construction of 102.95 km of new 330kV double-circuit lines
Construction of 104.59 km of 132kV double-circuit lines
Development of four 330/132/33kV substations and two 132/33kV substations
Multiple line bay extensions to improve efficiency and reduce system losses
According to Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, the partnership with Japanese companies such as Toshiba, Hitachi, and Japan’s Transmission & Distribution Corporation is essential for unlocking Nigeria’s energy potential.
“Our focus is on transmission infrastructure, operational efficiency, and strategies to reduce system losses.
This $238 million loan from JICA provides the backbone for that transformation,” Adelabu explained.
Adelabu acknowledged Japan’s consistent support for Nigeria’s power sector, highlighting contributions in infrastructure, technical studies, training, and financing.
He emphasized that JICA’s backing is critical to expanding access to reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity across the country.
The project aims to strengthen Nigeria’s power transmission network, improve system reliability, and enhance overall efficiency, ultimately supporting industrial growth and meeting rising electricity demand nationwide.

‘Misplaced Priority’: Peter Obi Blasts FG’s ₦142bn Bus Terminal Project

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has slammed the Federal Government’s approval of ₦142 billion for the construction of bus terminals across Nigeria, describing it as a reckless misplacement of priorities.
Obi issued a statement on Friday, August 22, via his Official X formerly Twitter platform, warning that the project reflects poor leadership and lack of focus in managing Nigeria’s limited resources. He titled his statement, “₦142 Billion for Bus Terminals.”
According to him, the true test of leadership is how scarce resources are prioritized.
He stressed that investing such a huge amount in bus terminals while critical sectors like healthcare suffer shows a government that is out of touch with citizens’ realities.
Obi said: “The difference between success and failure in any nation is how leaders prioritise resources.
The decision to spend ₦142 billion on six bus terminals exposes a lack of competence and vision. It is a clear sign of poor leadership.”
The Federal Executive Council had recently approved the funds for the construction of one modern bus terminal in each of the six geopolitical zones.
The government described it as part of efforts to modernise transport infrastructure and improve mobility nationwide.
But Obi strongly disagreed. He compared the allocation to healthcare funding, pointing out that the combined budget for all teaching hospitals and federal psychiatric centres in Nigeria is less than ₦100 billion in the 2024 budget.
“This is disturbing,” Obi continued, “because health remains one of the most critical sectors of development. Yet it is underfunded and deteriorating rapidly.
The World Health Organization has reported that over 20 million Nigerians live with mental health conditions.
This is a tragic irony. How can the government ignore this crisis and focus on bus terminals?”
He argued that the health sector, alongside education and poverty reduction programs, deserves priority attention.
Obi insisted that until government spending reflects the real needs of Nigerians, the country will remain trapped in poor governance.
Many Nigerians have also taken to social media to express anger, echoing Obi’s concerns. Critics argue that the decision proves the Federal Government is disconnected from the economic struggles of ordinary citizens.
For Obi, the ₦142 billion project is not just a case of wrong timing.
He sees it as a clear example of governance failure and misplaced priorities.
