Nenadi Usman hails court verdict, says Abure’s tenure over

(DDM) – Senator Nenadi Usman has welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja affirming the expiration of Julius Abure’s tenure as National Chairman of the Labour Party.

DDM gathered that the ruling was delivered in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1523/2025, which dismissed in its entirety the case filed by Abure against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The former minister described the judgment as an authoritative affirmation of the rule of law and a victory for the supremacy of the judiciary.

She noted that the decision aligned with the April 4, 2025 ruling of the Supreme Court in Appeal No. SC/CV/56/2025.

That apex court verdict had nullified earlier recognitions of Abure’s claim to leadership within the Labour Party.

According to Usman, the Federal High Court correctly struck out Abure’s case for lack of jurisdiction, reiterating that the Supreme Court remains final on such matters.

She stressed that Section 287 of the 1999 Constitution binds all authorities in Nigeria to obey decisions of the Supreme Court without exception.

Usman also praised INEC for its sworn testimony during the case, which she described as both courageous and transparent.

In its counter-affidavit, INEC confirmed that Abure’s tenure and that of his National Executive Committee expired in June 2024.

The Commission further testified that it neither monitored nor recognised the Labour Party convention held in Nnewi on March 27, 2024.

INEC maintained that the event was in violation of the Nigerian Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the party’s internal rules.

For Usman, this clarity removed any lingering doubts and reinforced the supremacy of the law in the internal affairs of the Labour Party.

She urged all party members to move beyond what she termed “a needless distraction” and focus on rebuilding the Labour Party.

According to her, the party must now reposition itself as a disciplined, credible, and people-centred movement.

She emphasised her own role as Interim National Chairman, pledging commitment to unity and internal democracy.

Her priority, she added, is to ensure compliance with the party’s Constitution and strengthen transparency in internal processes.

She argued that restoring order within the Labour Party is vital as the party prepares for future political contests.

Usman maintained that under her leadership, Labour Party members will experience a renewed culture of discipline and accountability.

She concluded by calling on stakeholders to embrace unity and prepare the party for the task of national relevance.
