NAFDAC Raises Alarm Over Tampered Baby Formula in Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public health alert over the circulation of tampered tins of SMA Gold First Infant Milk Formula in Kaduna State.

In Public Alert No. 06/2026 released on Sunday, the agency said a sample bearing batch number 22939510A1206, manufactured on January 20, 2025, was found with a falsified expiry date extended to January 20, 2027.

The product carries NAFDAC registration number B1-2783, assigned to legitimate SMA Gold 1 formula produced for the Nigerian market by Nestlé.

NAFDAC said the tampered product allegedly caused gastrointestinal distress in a four-month-old infant after consumption.

According to the agency, physical examination revealed clear signs of date alteration, with the expiry date on the preprinted sticker inconsistent with the original printed marking beneath it.

The regulator warned that altering shelf life without approval compromises product safety and may endanger infants. It noted that expired formula can harbour microbial contamination and degraded nutrients, posing serious health risks to babies whose immune systems are still developing.

NAFDAC has directed zonal directors and state coordinators to intensify surveillance and remove the affected products from circulation.

Distributors, retailers, healthcare professionals and caregivers were advised to verify authenticity, purchase only from licensed suppliers and report suspicious products.

Consumers are also urged to report adverse reactions or suspected sales through the nearest NAFDAC office or official reporting platforms.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring regulated products meet safety and quality standards.
