MultiChoice, the parent company behind DStv and a subsidiary of CANAL+, has confirmed that all content previously available on Showmax will transition to DStv Stream starting April 1, 2026. This strategic move marks the closure of the current Showmax platform on April 30, ensuring that audiences continue to access a wide range of popular series, originals, and African productions without disruption.

To facilitate the transition, DStv Stream will introduce a dedicated Showmax section, bringing together a curated selection of fan-favourite titles and critically acclaimed originals. Subscribers will be able to find shows such as WURA, Flawsome, Cheta M, Princess on a Hill, and Under the Influence, alongside other popular African series like The Wife from South Africa and Kenya’s Single Kiasi. The new section ensures that locally produced African stories, which helped establish Showmax as a leading platform, remain accessible within DStv Stream’s broader ecosystem.

Current Showmax customers will automatically be migrated to DStv Stream on Compact, Compact Plus, or Premium packages, with no additional cost until May 31, 2026. The transition is designed to provide a seamless experience, combining on-demand entertainment and live television in one platform. DStv Stream’s offering includes tens of thousands of hours of movies and series, more than 100 live channels, premium kids’ programming, and world-class sports coverage.

Kemi Omotosho, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, emphasized that the move reflects the company’s long-term commitment to streaming. “Showmax unlocked a wave of world-class African storytelling,” she said, noting that the platform’s collaborations with local producers, writers, and creative teams helped bring productions like Spinners a joint venture with CANAL+ that aired across Africa and France to global audiences. Omotosho assured viewers that this commitment to African content remains unchanged.

The integration of Showmax content into DStv Stream also strengthens the platform’s sports offering. While Showmax Premier League was limited to mobile devices, DStv Stream provides broader access to live sports, including the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, LaLiga, Serie A, and ESPN channels, viewable on smart TVs and mobile devices. This makes the platform more versatile, accommodating a variety of viewing preferences for sports fans.

By merging Showmax’s acclaimed originals with DStv Stream’s extensive library, MultiChoice aims to provide audiences with the best of both worlds: a combination of high-quality local storytelling and premium international entertainment. The move also underscores MultiChoice’s strategy to consolidate its streaming services and enhance its position as Africa’s most comprehensive entertainment platform.

The shift is expected to offer significant benefits to both creators and viewers. Local talent continues to gain visibility across a platform with wider reach, while subscribers enjoy an integrated entertainment experience featuring African originals, international series, movies, live channels, and sports all in one place. For fans of Showmax Originals, this migration ensures continuity, preserving access to beloved content while expanding the ways in which it can be enjoyed.
