Russia’s security agency says it has detained a German woman who was allegedly carrying a bomb in her backpack, in what it claims was part of a covert operation linked to Ukraine.

A backpack nearby is later blown up by bomb disposal experts.

The FSB says the plot was part of what it describes as a “false-flag” operation coordinated by Ukrainian intelligence.

It also claims a second suspect, a man from Central Asia, had been recruited separately and believed he was working for a terrorist group. According to Russian authorities, he was supposed to carry out the actual attack.

Officials allege that Ukrainian operatives were behind the scenes, posing as members of a banned international terrorist organisation to direct the plan.

Meanwhile, Germany’s foreign ministry says it is aware of the reports but has not provided further details.

As it stands, much of the story rests on claims from Russian security services, with key details still unverified.
