The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a 55-year-old man for allegedly impersonating a legal practitioner and using a forged seal of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos.

The suspect was apprehended during an operation carried out by EFCC operatives in Lagos, although the exact time of the arrest was not immediately disclosed by the agency.

According to preliminary investigations, the individual had been presenting himself as a qualified lawyer and allegedly engaging in legal-related activities despite not being duly called to the Nigerian Bar.

Authorities revealed that the suspect was found in possession of forged Nigerian Bar Association seals, which are officially issued to licensed legal practitioners for authenticating court documents.

The EFCC noted that the use of fake NBA seals is a serious offense, as it undermines the integrity of the legal profession and can lead to miscarriage of justice.

Sources within the anti-graft agency indicated that the suspect may have used the forged seals to process legal documents, potentially deceiving unsuspecting clients and institutions.

The commission further disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s activities and whether he acted alone or as part of a wider syndicate involved in legal impersonation and document forgery.

Legal experts have warned that impersonation of lawyers poses significant risks to the justice system, as unqualified individuals handling legal matters can compromise cases and exploit vulnerable clients.

The EFCC reiterated its commitment to tackling fraud and professional misconduct across sectors, urging members of the public to verify the credentials of individuals claiming to be legal practitioners before engaging their services.

The anti-corruption agency also emphasized the importance of using only verified NBA seals, which can be authenticated through official channels provided by the Nigerian Bar Association.
