ADO-EKITI, EKITI STATE — The Ekiti State chapter of Afenifere has formally endorsed the Ekiti South Agenda ahead of the June 20, 2026 governorship election, declaring support for Ambassador Oluwadare Patrick Bejide as its preferred candidate.
The socio-political group stated that its decision was based on the need to promote equity, fairness, and inclusiveness in the state’s political leadership structure.
Afenifere argued that a historical review of governance in Ekiti State shows a long-standing imbalance in the distribution of power among the three senatorial districts.
According to the group, the North and Central senatorial districts have dominated the governorship position since the creation of the state.
It noted that the North has governed for about 12 years, while the Central has held power for approximately 16 years, leaving the South politically marginalized.
The organization described the situation as unjust and inconsistent with democratic principles of fairness and equal representation.
Afenifere stressed that it is both morally and politically necessary for power to shift to the Ekiti South Senatorial District.
The group maintained that equity must be demonstrated through action rather than rhetoric, especially in a democratic setting.
Reaffirming its earlier position, Afenifere declared Ambassador Bejide as the most credible and qualified aspirant to lead the state at this time.
It highlighted his extensive experience in governance, noting his previous role as Secretary to the State Government under multiple administrations.
The group stated that his tenure in that position demonstrated administrative competence and the ability to manage complex government operations.
Afenifere also referenced his diplomatic experience as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Canada, where he was said to have built valuable international relationships.
It added that such global exposure could be beneficial in attracting investment and development opportunities to Ekiti State.
The organization further emphasized Bejide’s longstanding advocacy for the political inclusion of Ekiti South.
It noted that his campaign has focused on rural development, youth empowerment, job creation, and improved access to financial support.
Afenifere pointed to his proposed seven-point development agenda, which covers key sectors such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, and agriculture.
The group expressed confidence that his leadership would promote balanced development and address longstanding inequalities within the state.
It called on residents of Ekiti State to support the South Agenda regardless of political or social differences.
Afenifere urged voters to prioritise competence, fairness, and development in the forthcoming election.
The group concluded that the June 20, 2026 governorship election presents an opportunity to correct historical imbalances in the state’s leadership structure.
The statement was signed by the Ekiti State Chairman of Afenifere, Pastor Dr. L.O. Olajuyinnu, and the State General Secretary, Hon. Afolabi Olaiya Idowu.
