Fernandez Apologises to Rangers Fans Following Painful Scottish Title Setback

Nigerian defender Emmanuel Fernandez has publicly apologised to Rangers supporters after the club’s hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership title suffered a major blow following a disappointing defeat to arch rivals Celtic.

The emotional apology came after Rangers lost 3 1 at Celtic Park in a result that effectively ended their chances of reclaiming the Scottish league crown this season. The defeat deepened frustration among supporters who had hoped the club would finally end Celtic’s recent dominance in Scottish football.

For Fernandez, the painful outcome represented more than just another defeat. It marked the collapse of a title challenge that once looked promising earlier in the campaign before Rangers struggled for consistency during the closing stages of the season.

Speaking after the match, the Nigerian international admitted that the players failed to deliver the performances expected of them during the most important period of the campaign. He accepted responsibility for the team’s struggles and expressed regret over the disappointment supporters have endured.

According to the defender, the squad understands the expectations that come with representing a club of Rangers’ stature and history. He acknowledged that supporters deserved better results and stronger performances from the team, particularly in crucial matches that shaped the title race.

Fernandez stated that the players were fully aware of how painful the defeat was for fans who had supported the club throughout the season both at home and away.

The 24 year old centre back also reflected on his own performances, insisting that he preferred to examine his personal mistakes instead of shifting blame onto teammates or coaching staff. He admitted there were situations during recent matches where he could have defended better and contributed more effectively to the team’s overall performance.

His comments have drawn praise from sections of the Rangers fan base who view his willingness to accept responsibility as a sign of maturity and leadership despite his relatively young age.

The loss to Celtic was particularly damaging because it extended Rangers’ poor run of form during the decisive phase of the title race. Consecutive defeats and dropped points in recent weeks allowed Celtic to strengthen their grip at the top of the table while increasing pressure on Rangers players and management.

Questions have since emerged regarding the team’s mentality and ability to handle pressure in critical matches. However, Fernandez rejected suggestions that the squad lacked determination or commitment. Instead, he explained that the team struggled to manage difficult moments collectively during games.

He noted that every football club experiences periods of pressure and setbacks during a season, but successful teams are usually defined by how they respond during those challenging moments. According to him, Rangers failed to maintain composure and defensive stability when it mattered most.

Despite the disappointment, Fernandez expressed confidence in the long term future of the club. He described Rangers as a team with talented young players capable of learning from the painful experience and returning stronger next season.

The Nigerian defender has been regarded as one of the few positives in Rangers’ campaign following his impressive performances since arriving from English side Peterborough United. His commanding displays in defence, aerial dominance, and composure on the ball quickly earned him recognition among supporters and football analysts in Scotland.

Fernandez’s rise in European football has been remarkable. Only a few years ago, he was playing in the lower divisions of English football before securing his move to Rangers and eventually attracting attention from the Nigerian national team.

His development continued earlier this year after receiving his first invitation to the Super Eagles. The defender made an encouraging impression during his international debut and later scored his first goal for Nigeria in a friendly match, further increasing excitement surrounding his future with the national team.

Football observers believe Fernandez has the potential to become one of Nigeria’s leading defenders if he continues his current rate of development both at club and international level.

Meanwhile, Rangers supporters will now hope the club can recover quickly from the disappointment of another failed title challenge. Attention is gradually shifting toward rebuilding the squad and preparing for next season as pressure mounts on the club to compete more effectively against Celtic.

For Fernandez, however, the immediate focus remains on helping Rangers finish the season positively and restoring some pride for supporters after a campaign that ended in frustration and heartbreak
