Bala Mohammed denies Jonathan VP slot rumours

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has dismissed reports linking him to a vice-presidential bid alongside former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The speculation emerged following claims that Mohammed, who recently defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), was being considered as Jonathan’s running mate by a faction of the PDP led by Kabiru Turaki.

The rumours gained momentum after Nuhu Sada, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), suggested in a post on X that discussions were ongoing about pairing Jonathan with the Bauchi governor for the 2027 presidential race.

Jonathan was recently adopted as the presidential candidate of a PDP faction during a special convention held in Abuja. Although the former president was absent from the event, his certificate of return was received on his behalf by Bayelsa lawmaker Fred Agbedi.

However, Mohammed has now moved to set the record straight, insisting that his political plans have nothing to do with a presidential ticket.

In a statement posted on X, the governor said his attention remains firmly on securing the Bauchi South Senatorial seat under the platform of the APM.

“Thank you for your interest in my political aspirations. However, for the sake of clarity, my focus remains firmly on contesting for the Bauchi South Senatorial District seat under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM),” he wrote.

He urged the public to disregard reports suggesting otherwise, describing them as speculative and inaccurate.

Mohammed’s clarification comes amid growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections and follows his recent exit from the PDP, a move widely linked to the lingering leadership crisis within the opposition party.

With his latest statement, the governor has sought to end speculation about any potential alliance with Jonathan, reiterating that his immediate political objective is a return to the National Assembly as senator representing Bauchi South.
