Private tensions between Washington and Jerusalem are nothing new. Successive American and Israeli leaders have clashed over policy matters for decades. What makes this episode stand out is the unusually open nature of the dispute.
According to officials familiar with the conversation, Trump expressed concern over Israel’s plans for additional military strikes in Beirut’s southern suburbs, warning that continued attacks could undermine efforts to bring an end to the wider conflict involving Iran and its regional allies.

Still, strong alliances do not eliminate disagreements.
