ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigerian Senate has expressed support for legislative measures aimed at increasing the number of judges and justices across the country in a bid to address mounting case backlogs and improve the efficiency of the justice delivery system.
Lawmakers said the proposed reforms are designed to strengthen judicial capacity and ensure faster adjudication of cases that have continued to overwhelm courts at various levels nationwide.
The move follows growing concerns over delays in the resolution of legal disputes, with many cases reportedly taking several years before final judgment due to insufficient judicial manpower and increasing caseloads.
Senators noted that the expansion of the judiciary is critical to restoring public confidence in the justice system, which many stakeholders argue has been strained by procedural delays and limited resources.
According to discussions at the upper chamber, the proposed bills seek to create additional judicial positions and improve the overall structure of the court system, enabling faster handling of civil, criminal, and constitutional matters.
Lawmakers argued that the current number of judges is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of Nigeria’s growing population and expanding legal complexities, particularly in commercial, electoral, and criminal cases.
