A tragic incident in Uruezeani, Alor community, has left residents in shock following the death of Miss Chilaka Vivian, a National Diploma II Nursing student of the College of Nursing Sciences, Alor, whose lifeless body was discovered under disturbing circumstances on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the detention of a landlord, Mr. Ogochukwu Ugoeze, in connection with the incident as investigations continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death.
According to preliminary accounts gathered from the scene and community sources, the late student had been residing in a rented apartment outside the school hostel system, a decision reportedly permitted due to her marital status. She was said to be married to a Nigerian-based abroad spouse and had been living independently during her studies.
Residents of the area alleged that prior to the incident, the deceased had repeatedly experienced unwanted advances from her landlord, which she consistently rejected. Community members further claimed that tensions between both parties may have escalated in the days leading up to the tragic event.
It was gathered that on the night of the incident, the landlord allegedly confronted the student at her residence. Reports suggest that an altercation ensued during which the situation turned violent. The student was allegedly stabbed multiple times inside her apartment, resulting in fatal injuries before help could arrive.
Following the incident, Mr. Ugoeze reportedly presented himself at a nearby police station, claiming that an unknown intruder had broken into his compound and attacked his tenant while he was asleep. However, law enforcement officials disclosed that inconsistencies were quickly identified in his statement during initial questioning.
Police sources familiar with the investigation revealed that officers who arrived at the scene observed bloodstains not only within the tenant’s room but also extending into parts of the landlord’s residence, including the sitting area. These findings raised further suspicions regarding the account initially provided.
Investigators also noted the presence of a guard dog within the compound, which neighbors described as highly alert and quick to react to unusual movement or noise. Officers reportedly questioned how an alleged violent struggle could have occurred without attracting attention, particularly given the animal’s known sensitivity to disturbances during the night.
A kitchen knife believed to have been used in the incident was reportedly recovered at the scene and has been taken for forensic examination. The body of the deceased has since been deposited in a morgue for autopsy, as authorities work to determine the exact cause and sequence of events leading to her death.
The Anambra State Police Command confirmed that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with investigations. The case has also been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for more detailed forensic and interrogative procedures.
Police spokespersons emphasized that no conclusions have been reached at this stage, stressing that all claims remain subject to verification as the investigation progresses. They assured the public that a comprehensive and transparent inquiry will be conducted to ensure justice is served.
Meanwhile, the incident has sparked renewed concern within the Alor community over the safety of students living off campus. Some residents and stakeholders have called for stricter monitoring of rented accommodations used by students, particularly those living alone, while others have urged educational authorities to strengthen safety policies for students in vulnerable housing arrangements.
Security analysts have also weighed in on the importance of improving surveillance systems in residential areas with high student populations. Suggestions include the installation of CCTV cameras, improved neighborhood watch systems, and closer collaboration between landlords and institutional authorities to ensure tenant safety.
As investigations continue, the tragic death of Miss Chilaka Vivian has left her family, colleagues, and the wider academic community in mourning. Her remains are expected to be released to her family for burial arrangements following the completion of postmortem procedures.
Authorities have urged members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information as efforts continue to establish the full facts surrounding the case.
