ABUJA, NIGERIA — The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, Senator David Mark, has assured party members, candidates, and supporters that the party will remain on the ballot for the 2027 general elections despite a recent Federal High Court judgment reportedly ordering its deregistration.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Peter Lifu at the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court, has continued to generate reactions across the political space, with the ADC leadership describing it as a serious challenge to Nigeria’s democratic system. Mark made his remarks while receiving a delegation of ADC candidates in Abuja, where he sought to calm concerns among party faithful.
According to the former Senate President, the party believes the judgment cannot stand, insisting that it would be overturned by superior courts. He maintained that the legal process surrounding the matter is still active, noting that the Court of Appeal had earlier issued a stay of proceedings in the case and fixed October 27, 2027, for further hearing.
Mark questioned the legality of a judgment delivered while an appellate court order was still in effect, arguing that such a development raises concerns about due process and judicial consistency. He stressed that the ADC views the ruling as incompatible with established legal procedure and expects it to be set aside on appeal.
He further called on party members nationwide to remain calm and focused, urging them not to be distracted by what he described as a temporary setback. According to him, the party remains committed to its political objectives and to strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria.
Mark emphasized that the Independent National Electoral Commission process must protect political competition and ensure that Nigerians retain the right to choose from a broad range of political alternatives. He argued that any action perceived as limiting political participation could undermine public confidence in the electoral system.
Reassuring candidates and supporters, he stated that the ADC remains firmly on course for the 2027 elections and will continue its preparations without interruption. He expressed confidence that the judicial process would ultimately vindicate the party’s position and reinforce the rule of law.
Mark concluded by reiterating that there was no cause for panic within the party, insisting that the ADC remains united, resolute, and determined to present itself as a credible political alternative ahead of the next general election.
