The lifeless bodies of twin babies were discovered in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street in the Nwokedi area of Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State.
According to reports, residents said the infants were found on Sunday morning inside a box containing baby clothes. Passersby who made the discovery immediately alerted officers at the Okpoko Police Division.
One of the residents, identified simply as Uche, said the babies appeared to have been dumped in a manner that made them visible to anyone passing by.
“This is heartbreaking and should never happen. There are orphanages and places where people can seek help. It is difficult to understand how anyone could do this,” she said.
Another resident suggested that the babies may have been abandoned by someone unwilling or unable to care for them.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said investigations led to the arrest of the infants’ biological parents.
According to him, the parents are currently in police custody and assisting detectives as efforts continue to determine what led to the tragedy.
Ikenga said the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the incident as disturbing and condemned it as a serious violation of the sanctity of human life.
He added that officers attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters responded immediately after receiving information about the discovery.
“Operatives secured the scene, gathered evidence and launched an investigation. Preliminary findings led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the infants,” he said.
The police commissioner commended the officers for their swift response and assured residents that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
“Every child deserves protection, care and the chance to live. The Command remains committed to ensuring justice is served in this case,” Ikenga added.
Police said investigations are ongoing and further details will be made public as the case progresses
