Victor Osimhen’s Barcelona Suitability Questioned as Serdar Dursun Shares Honest Assessment

Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen has once again found himself at the centre of Europe’s transfer conversation after former Turkey international Serdar Dursun questioned whether the Super Eagles star possesses the technical qualities required to thrive at Barcelona.

The comments come at a time when Osimhen is enjoying another outstanding campaign with Turkish champions Galatasaray, where his goals and all-round performances have attracted interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs ahead of the summer transfer window.

Speaking during the Cup Diary programme on Turkish broadcaster Spor Smart, Dursun praised Osimhen’s talent but expressed doubts about his compatibility with Barcelona’s possession-based style of football.

According to the former Fenerbahce striker, Barcelona’s tactical philosophy demands forwards with exceptional technical ability and close control, qualities he believes are not among Osimhen’s greatest strengths.

“I don’t think Osimhen can play for Barcelona,” Dursun said while acknowledging the Nigerian’s qualities. He argued that although the striker is highly talented, his technical profile may not perfectly match the Catalan club’s traditional style of play.

Dursun’s remarks have sparked fresh debate among football fans and analysts, particularly because Osimhen has consistently delivered impressive numbers throughout his career in France, Italy and Turkey.

The 27-year-old has continued to establish himself as one of Europe’s most reliable goalscorers. During the 2025/26 season, he registered 22 goals and eight assists in all competitions, playing a crucial role as Galatasaray successfully defended the Turkish Super Lig title. His pace, aerial dominance, aggressive pressing and clinical finishing have made him one of the continent’s most sought-after centre-forwards.

Those performances have inevitably attracted attention from several elite clubs. Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Chelsea have all been linked with the Nigerian international as speculation over his future continues to intensify.

Despite those reports, Barcelona’s recruitment plans remain uncertain. Recent reports from Spain and Turkey suggest the La Liga champions are also monitoring Argentine forward Julián Álvarez, whose playing style is widely viewed as a natural fit for the club’s possession-oriented system.

While Dursun questioned Osimhen’s suitability for Barcelona, many observers believe the Nigerian has repeatedly proven his ability to adapt to different tactical systems throughout his professional career.

After emerging as one of Africa’s brightest young talents following the FIFA U-17 World Cup, Osimhen developed into a prolific striker during spells with Charleroi, Lille and Napoli before continuing his remarkable progress in Turkey.

His blend of explosive acceleration, intelligent movement inside the penalty area, aerial strength and relentless work ethic has made him a nightmare for defenders. These qualities helped Napoli end their long wait for the Serie A title before he later became a key figure for Galatasaray.

Although he is sometimes criticised for not possessing the intricate dribbling ability associated with Barcelona’s traditional attacking players, many coaches value his direct approach, physical presence and exceptional finishing ability.

As transfer speculation grows, Osimhen himself has remained focused on his football, allowing his performances on the pitch to speak louder than the rumours surrounding his future.

With pre-season preparations approaching, the Nigerian is expected to make a decision regarding his long-term future in the coming weeks. Whether he remains at Galatasaray or secures another move to one of Europe’s elite clubs, he is likely to remain one of the most talked-about strikers during the transfer window.

For now, Dursun’s opinion represents one perspective in an ongoing football debate. While questions remain about whether Osimhen would perfectly fit Barcelona’s tactical identity, few can dispute his status as one of the game’s most dangerous centre-forwards, with his goalscoring record continuing to command attention across Europe.
