Italian champions Inter Milan have reportedly identified Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence as one of their top transfer targets as they prepare for the new Serie A season, with discussions already underway over a potential move for the versatile England international.

The Nerazzurri are searching for a long term replacement following the departure of Dutch wing back Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid, and Spence has quickly emerged as a leading candidate after enjoying a remarkable rise in both club and international football.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Inter have initiated contact with Tottenham regarding the 25-year-old defender, who is believed to be open to the opportunity of continuing his career in Italy.

A move to the San Siro would represent another significant milestone in Spence’s football journey after overcoming a difficult start to life in North London.

When Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022, expectations were high following his outstanding loan spell at Nottingham Forest, where he played a crucial role in helping the club secure promotion to the Premier League through the Championship play-offs.

However, adapting to life at Tottenham proved far from straightforward.

The defender struggled for regular playing time and spent periods away from the club on loan in search of first team football.

Temporary spells at Rennes in France, Leeds United and Italian side Genoa allowed Spence to continue his development while gaining valuable experience across different leagues and tactical systems.

His time with Genoa proved particularly beneficial.

The English full back featured in 16 Serie A matches during the second half of the 2023–24 campaign, impressing with his pace, defensive awareness and ability to contribute in attack.

Those performances left a positive impression in Italy and are believed to have influenced Inter’s current interest.

Back at Tottenham, Spence eventually forced his way into the first team and established himself as one of the club’s most dependable defenders.

Last season he made 30 Premier League appearances, showing consistent improvement under the coaching staff while demonstrating his versatility by operating on either flank and occasionally in more advanced positions.

His resurgence at club level has also been reflected on the international stage.

Initially viewed as an outsider for England’s FIFA World Cup squad, Spence has become one of the tournament’s surprise success stories.

England manager Thomas Tuchel placed his trust in the defender despite concerns over his fitness following a broken jaw suffered toward the end of the domestic season.

Playing with a protective face mask, Spence has delivered a series of disciplined and energetic performances throughout England’s World Cup campaign.

His contribution during the Three Lions’ quarter final victory over Norway attracted widespread praise, with his pace, work rate and defensive composure helping England secure a place in the semi finals.

His performances have reportedly strengthened his chances of earning a starting place for England’s crucial semi final clash against Argentina.

With 13 senior international appearances now to his name, Spence has firmly established himself as one of England’s emerging defensive options.

Inter believe his versatility makes him an ideal fit for their tactical system.

Although naturally deployed as a right back or right wing back, the defender has repeatedly shown his ability to operate on the left side of defence and even higher up the pitch when required.

That tactical flexibility is highly valued by Inter’s coaching staff as they prepare to compete simultaneously in Serie A, the UEFA Champions League and domestic cup competitions.

The Italian giants are aiming to defend their league crown after winning their 21st Serie A title and are eager to strengthen key areas of the squad before the transfer window closes.

Replacing Dumfries has become a major priority, and Spence’s age, experience and familiarity with Italian football have made him an attractive option.

Tottenham, meanwhile, may face an important decision regarding the player’s future.

Spence remains under contract until 2029, with an option to extend his stay for an additional year, placing the North London club in a strong negotiating position.

The club are under no immediate pressure to sell, particularly given the defender’s growing importance within the squad.

However, a significant financial offer from Inter could encourage Tottenham to consider negotiations, especially if it allows the club to reinvest in other areas before the new season begins.

For Spence, a return to Serie A would present another opportunity to continue his impressive career revival.

Having already adapted successfully during his previous spell with Genoa, the defender understands the demands of Italian football and could transition smoothly into Inter’s system.

Regular UEFA Champions League football and the chance to compete for major domestic honours would also represent an attractive next step for the England international.

Although negotiations remain at an early stage, Inter’s interest highlights the growing reputation Spence has built over the past year.

From struggling for opportunities at Tottenham to becoming a World Cup performer and attracting interest from one of Europe’s most successful clubs, the defender’s remarkable transformation has become one of football’s standout success stories.

Whether Tottenham decide to retain one of their most improved players or sanction a move to Italy, Djed Spence appears set to remain one of the most closely watched names during the remainder of the summer transfer window.
