Veteran British politician Andy Burnham has been elected the new leader of the ruling Labour Party, paving the way for him to become the United Kingdom’s next Prime Minister.
The announcement was made on Friday during a special Labour Party conference by Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood, who declared Burnham elected unopposed.
“There being no other eligibly nominated candidate, it is therefore my honour to declare that the duly elected leader of the Labour Party is Andy Burnham,” Mahmood said.
Burnham succeeds the party’s previous leader and is expected to formally assume the office of Prime Minister in line with the UK’s constitutional process.
The development marks a significant leadership transition for the governing Labour Party as Burnham prepares to lead both the party and the British government.
