Keir Starmer has officially stepped down as the United Kingdom’s prime minister, bringing his two-year tenure to an end as Andy Burnham prepares to take over the country’s leadership.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street on Monday before heading to Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation to King Charles III, Starmer said he was leaving office with pride in what his government had achieved.

“I am confident that Britain is now stronger and fairer than it was two years ago,” he told reporters during his farewell address.

Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer said he was departing “with good grace” and “with a smile,” adding that he was proud of the progress made under his administration.

After delivering his remarks, the outgoing prime minister left Downing Street alongside his wife, Victoria Starmer, before travelling to Buckingham Palace to submit his resignation to the King.

Andy Burnham is expected to assume office as Britain’s new prime minister following his audience with King Charles III.
