ABUJA, Nigeria — Public affairs commentator Mobolaji Sanusi has called for urgent and far-reaching reforms to address what he described as the growing culture of systemic self-interest and corruption in Nigeria, warning that the country’s institutions, human capital and development prospects could continue to deteriorate without decisive action.
Sanusi made the remarks while reflecting on what he sees as the changing values within Nigerian society, arguing that the pursuit of personal gain has increasingly replaced patriotism, integrity and hard work as the dominant driving force in both public and private life.
According to him, Nigeria is experiencing an unprecedented period in which individual and institutional decisions are largely motivated by personal benefits rather than a genuine commitment to national development. He said this trend has weakened accountability, discouraged meritocracy and eroded public confidence in governance.
Sanusi argued that the country’s challenges extend beyond corruption alone, noting that the decline in ethical leadership has also affected knowledge acquisition, human capital development, business competitiveness and the overall quality of public institutions.
He maintained that respect for accountability and transparency has diminished significantly, while competence and sound leadership are too often overshadowed by personal interests and political patronage. According to him, these shortcomings have combined to create an environment where corruption continues to thrive, slowing economic growth and weakening public institutions.
The commentator stressed that Nigeria possesses enormous intellectual capacity, abundant natural resources and a youthful population capable of driving sustainable development. However, he warned that these advantages would remain underutilized unless the country embraces meaningful reforms aimed at strengthening governance, promoting integrity and rewarding excellence.
Sanusi said improving the ease of doing business, investing in education and skills development, and restoring confidence in public institutions should become national priorities. He argued that countries that have achieved sustained economic growth did so by building strong institutions, enforcing accountability and encouraging innovation rather than allowing systemic corruption to flourish.
He further noted that good leadership must be accompanied by policies that encourage transparency, protect public resources and create opportunities for citizens to contribute meaningfully to national development. According to him, rebuilding public trust requires leaders who are committed to serving the national interest above personal or political considerations.
Sanusi warned that failure to confront the underlying causes of corruption could result in further institutional decline, making it increasingly difficult for Nigeria to compete effectively in the global economy or meet the aspirations of its growing population.
He described the current situation as a critical moment in the country’s development, insisting that urgent corrective measures are needed to prevent further regression. Such measures, he said, should include strengthening institutions, enforcing accountability, promoting ethical leadership, improving governance standards and creating an environment where competence and hard work are consistently rewarded.
