IBADAN, Nigeria — The Oyo State Government has taken delivery of two surveillance aircraft valued at approximately ₦7.76 billion, marking a significant step in its efforts to strengthen security operations and improve intelligence gathering across the state.
Governor Seyi Makinde received the aircraft on Tuesday at the newly upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport in Ibadan, nearly one year after announcing plans to acquire the platforms as part of his administration’s strategy to enhance the state’s security architecture.
The aircraft, identified as Diamond DA42 MNG surveillance platforms, are specifically designed for aerial intelligence, reconnaissance and surveillance missions. They are expected to assist security agencies in monitoring forests, border communities and other remote areas that have become hideouts for criminal elements.
According to the state government, the deployment of the aircraft will significantly improve aerial surveillance capabilities, facilitate faster intelligence gathering and strengthen rapid response to emerging security threats across Oyo State.
The aircraft are also expected to enhance security operations along Oyo State’s borders with Kwara State and the Benin Republic, areas considered vulnerable to cross-border criminal activities and other security challenges.
Government officials said the acquisition forms part of broader efforts to modernise the state’s security infrastructure by providing law enforcement agencies with advanced technology to combat kidnapping, banditry, illegal mining and other criminal activities.
The delivery followed earlier delays in the assembly process, with the state government previously assuring residents that the aircraft would arrive before the end of July. Their successful delivery now marks the completion of a major component of the state’s security enhancement programme.
Security experts have welcomed the development, noting that aerial surveillance platforms can provide real-time intelligence, improve coordination among security agencies and increase the effectiveness of operations in difficult-to-access terrain.
The Makinde administration expressed confidence that the new surveillance aircraft will complement existing security initiatives and contribute to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
Authorities also reiterated their commitment to investing in modern security infrastructure while working closely with federal security agencies and neighbouring states to address evolving security threats and maintain peace throughout Oyo State.
