ABUJA, Nigeria — The Federal Government has announced plans to strengthen the Safe Schools Initiative through closer collaboration with security agencies to improve the safety of students, teachers and schools across the country.
The government said the renewed effort is aimed at addressing security challenges affecting educational institutions, including attacks on schools, kidnappings and other threats that have disrupted learning in some parts of Nigeria. Officials noted that protecting schools remains a national priority to ensure children can continue their education in a safe environment.
According to the government, the strengthened initiative will involve increased cooperation with the Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies. The partnership is expected to improve intelligence gathering, strengthen surveillance and ensure quicker responses to security incidents involving schools.
Authorities explained that the programme will also focus on preventive measures by enhancing security around schools, improving early warning systems and strengthening communication between school administrators and security agencies. Communities will also be encouraged to support efforts aimed at protecting schools and reporting suspicious activities.
The Federal Government said it will continue working with state governments, development partners and relevant stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the initiative. Officials stressed that collaboration at all levels is necessary to guarantee the safety of learners and education workers across the country.
The initiative will also include training programmes for teachers, school administrators and security personnel on emergency preparedness and response. Government officials said regular security assessments and awareness campaigns would be conducted to improve the capacity of schools to respond effectively during emergencies.
The Safe Schools Initiative was introduced to enhance the protection of schools, particularly in areas affected by insecurity. Over the years, attacks on educational institutions have disrupted academic activities, displaced students and teachers, and affected access to quality education in several communities.
