The death toll from the twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June has risen to 6,301, as rescue teams and families continue efforts to find survivors and recover victims from the rubble.

National Assembly Chief Jorge Rodriguez announced the latest figure on Monday, up from the previous toll of 6,125.

The 7.2- and 7.5-magnitude earthquakes destroyed about 190 buildings and left roughly 24,000 people homeless, forcing many survivors into temporary camps.

The government has yet to release an official figure for those still missing. However, La Guaira Governor Jose Alejandro Teran said about 1,400 people remained unaccounted for in the worst-hit state.

The devastation comes amid another major earthquake in neighbouring Colombia.

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Monday, killing at least 111 people and injuring 87, according to Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella.

The quake was centred in the Chocó region, where authorities have begun deploying emergency funds and humanitarian assistance to affected communities.

De la Espriella said more than 1,400 families and individuals had been affected by the disaster, while those injured or requiring urgent medical attention were being prioritised.
