ABEOKUTA, NIGERIA — Award-winning journalist and former Special Adviser to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Modele Sarafa-Yusuf, has resigned her membership of the All Progressives Congress, ending her latest attempt to pursue the Ogun State governorship under the ruling party .
Sarafa-Yusuf announced her resignation in a statement posted on X on Thursday, confirming that she had formally notified the APC leadership in Ogun State and submitted her resignation letter . The decision followed an extended period of travelling, spending time with family, and engaging in what she described as “much thought and quiet reflection” about her political future .
“My time in the APC has been an important part of my political journey, and I am grateful for the people I have met, the relationships I have built and the experiences that have shaped my understanding of public service and leadership,” she stated . However, she noted that “there comes a time when one must have the courage to reassess one’s path” .
The former broadcaster emphasised that her resignation should not be interpreted as a withdrawal from public life . “What I know with certainty is that my commitment to public service remains undiminished and that I will continue to be guided by the same values that brought me into public life in the first place: service, integrity, inclusion, competence, and a genuine desire to make a difference,” she said . She clarified, “It is, therefore, important to reiterate that I am not stepping away from public service. I am taking the next step in the journey” .
Her resignation comes just 72 hours after the Ogun APC reaffirmed Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi, as its recognised candidate for the 2027 governorship election . Sarafa-Yusuf had formally declared her intention to contest the Ogun governorship election on the APC platform in February 2026, following an unsuccessful bid for the party’s ticket in the 2023 election cycle .
While she did not expressly link her resignation to the party’s choice of candidate, she said she was taking time to determine how best to continue contributing to Ogun State and Nigeria, leaving her next political move open . She stated that she would return to her professional and business commitments while taking time to determine the form her next phase of political engagement would take .
