The Nigeria Football Federation has rejected reports of a purported letter from FIFA concerning alleged government interference in the administration of Nigerian football, describing the document as completely fake.
The development comes as a Nigerian football delegation held a high level meeting with FIFA President Gianni Infantino in Zurich, Switzerland, on Tuesday, creating renewed attention around the ongoing changes within the Nigeria Football Federation.
The NFF issued its denial after a letter began circulating across sections of the Nigerian media, reportedly claiming that FIFA had requested clarification over recent developments surrounding the federation and the resignation of its former leadership.
According to the NFF, however, the document did not originate from FIFA.
In a statement shared through its official social media platform, the federation categorically dismissed the reported correspondence and insisted that FIFA had already accepted the resignations of the former NFF executive committee members.
“The NFF has debunked news of a ‘letter’ circulating in sections of the media as being from world football governing body, FIFA. It is totally fake,” the federation stated.
The NFF further explained that FIFA had already acknowledged and accepted the resignations of the former principal officers and members of the executive committee, effectively disputing claims that the world governing body was demanding explanations over the leadership changes.
The denial comes at a particularly sensitive moment for Nigerian football following a major shake up within the federation.
Former NFF President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and members of the executive committee resigned from their positions on August 27 following intense criticism of the country’s football administration. Their departures came after a difficult period for Nigerian football, including the failure of the Super Eagles to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Super Falcons also suffered a historic setback after failing to qualify for the 2027 Women’s World Cup, ending Nigeria’s remarkable record of appearing at every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991.
The disappointing results have intensified calls for structural reforms across Nigerian football, with stakeholders demanding improvements in administration, grassroots development and the performance of the national teams.
Amid the leadership transition, the NFF appointed an interim administrative structure to oversee the federation’s affairs.
Emmanuel Ikpeme, a former deputy general secretary of the federation, was appointed interim general secretary, while Ademola Olajire, who previously headed the NFF’s media and communications department, was named interim deputy general secretary.
The Nigerian government has also called for significant reforms in the country’s football administration following what President Bola Tinubu described as repeated failures.
Against this backdrop, Tuesday’s meeting with Infantino in Zurich carries considerable significance.
The Nigerian delegation included National Sports Commission Chairman Shehu Dikko and Director General Bukola Olopade, alongside former NFF President and former FIFA Council member Amaju Pinnick. The group met with Infantino as discussions continue over the future direction of Nigerian football.
The talks reportedly focused on the ongoing restructuring of Nigerian football, recent leadership changes within the NFF and possible steps towards strengthening the administration and development of the sport.
The meeting is also important because FIFA statutes generally require national football associations to operate independently from government interference. Previous disputes involving Nigeria have demonstrated how sensitive the relationship between FIFA and national governments can become when football administration is involved.
The alleged letter that the NFF has now dismissed as fake reportedly raised concerns about claims that Gusau resigned following a directive from the Presidency. It was also said to have referenced FIFA rules protecting the independence of member associations and possible sanctions if clarification was not provided.
However, the NFF’s latest statement has rejected the document entirely.
The federation’s position means the immediate focus has shifted away from the alleged FIFA warning and towards the restructuring process currently underway in Nigerian football.
For Nigerian football supporters, the priority will be ensuring that the leadership transition produces meaningful changes rather than another temporary solution.
