Manchester City have rewritten the record books after becoming the first club in football history to spend more than €500m on new players in a single transfer window.
The Premier League giants finished the 2026/27 summer transfer window with an extraordinary expenditure of €526.2m, moving above Liverpool’s previous benchmark of €483m set during the 2025/26 campaign.
According to Transfermarkt, City’s remarkable spending spree was completed on deadline day when the club secured the signings of Iliman Ndiaye from Everton and Enzo Fernández from Chelsea.
Ndiaye arrived for a reported €70m, while Fernández cost approximately €145m, a fee that equalled the British transfer record. The two late additions pushed City’s total spending beyond the €500m mark and cemented their place at the top of the all-time list for the highest expenditure in a single transfer window.
The scale of Manchester City’s activity underlines the extent of the squad rebuild taking place at the Etihad Stadium. The club had already invested heavily in midfield and other areas before making their dramatic deadline-day moves.
Among their other major acquisitions was Elliot Anderson, who joined for around €135m, while highly rated French midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi reportedly cost approximately €95m.
City also strengthened with several other additions as they reshaped the squad for the new season.
Their spending was not simply a case of throwing money into the market without generating revenue from departures. Transfermarkt figures show that City brought in around €337m through player sales during the same window.
That means their reported net spend stood at approximately €189m, significantly lower than the headline €526.2m gross expenditure.
Nevertheless, the sheer scale of the incoming transfers places City in a league of their own when it comes to single-window spending.
Liverpool had previously occupied the top position after spending around €483m during the 2025/26 summer window. Their record-breaking recruitment campaign included Florian Wirtz, who arrived for approximately €125m, before the Reds completed the signing of Alexander Isak for around €145m.
Chelsea’s previous spending records also feature prominently on the list. The London club spent approximately €418m during the 2023/24 window, while their €407m outlay in the 2026/27 window places them fourth on the all-time ranking.
Tottenham Hotspur also enjoyed an expensive summer, spending approximately €366m to occupy fifth position. Saudi Pro League giants Al-Hilal follow with €353m from their 2023/24 recruitment campaign, while Paris Saint-Germain spent around €350m during the same period.
Real Madrid’s €331m expenditure in the 2019/20 summer window ranks eighth, followed by another Chelsea campaign in ninth place after the club spent approximately €330m in 2022/23.
Newcastle United complete the top 10 after spending around €301m during the 2026/27 summer transfer window.
The latest figures highlight how dramatically transfer spending has increased across elite European football. Clubs are increasingly prepared to invest huge sums in an effort to remain competitive, particularly as the financial rewards associated with success in domestic and European competitions continue to grow.
Manchester City’s record, however, stands out because of the speed and scale of their activity.
The club crossed the €500m threshold in one summer, something no other team has previously achieved according to the Transfermarkt figures. Their recruitment drive also represents a significant statement of intent as they enter a new era under manager Enzo Maresca.
City will now be expected to justify their huge investment on the pitch. With several expensive new arrivals joining an already talented squad, expectations will be high for the club to challenge for major honours.
The record spending also adds another layer of interest to the Premier League, where several clubs have shown a willingness to spend heavily during the latest transfer window.
While the headline figure is €526.2m, City’s €337m in player sales means the financial picture is more complicated than the gross spending figure suggests.
Even so, Manchester City have achieved something historic. They are now the biggest single-window spenders in football history, with their €526m summer expenditure setting a new benchmark that other clubs will have to surpass.
