Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio.
The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday along the Gubio-Kareto-Damasak highway while Gubio and his team were travelling to Mobbar Local Government Area for a thank-you visit to party supporters.
Sources said the convoy came under heavy attack around Kareto at about 2:30pm, with the terrorists reportedly firing rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) and engaging the convoy in sporadic gunfire.
The attack was, however, repelled by a combined team of soldiers, police, NSCDC, DSS, Civilian Joint Task Force and vigilantes.
A source who escaped the attack said the incident was terrifying, adding that some police armoured vehicles were damaged. No casualties were reported.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, also confirmed the attack, saying police tactical operatives countered the suspected terrorists after they attacked the convoy with an improvised explosive device (IED) and RPGs.
According to him, the security team forced the attackers to retreat into the surrounding bush before scanning and clearing the area for secondary explosive threats.
He said the convoy, which conveyed Gubio, government officials and political stakeholders, was safely evacuated to a secure location, with no casualties recorded among members of the entourage.
