Supporters of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), have alleged that his visit to Benue State was obstructed by suspected sponsored thugs on Tuesday morning.
Obi was reportedly in the state as part of his engagements on issues including insecurity, unemployment and the welfare of Nigerians affected by the economic crisis.
According to reports, individuals allegedly blocked access routes as the former Anambra State governor and his supporters attempted to move through parts of the state.
Photos from the scene showed vehicles held up on dusty roads, with crowds gathered around the area.
The incident came amid earlier warnings by the Benue State Government over restrictions on unauthorised visits to internally displaced persons’ (IDP) camps.
Obi’s supporters, however, argued that such restrictions should not prevent political leaders from moving freely or engaging with citizens affected by insecurity and economic hardship.
Members of the Obidient movement criticised the alleged obstruction and questioned the role of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration in the development.
They maintained that Obi’s visit was intended to interact with communities affected by insecurity and hardship, insisting that political leaders should be allowed to engage Nigerians across the country ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Benue State Government had yet to issue an official statement on the alleged obstruction as of the time of filing this report.
The development has further fuelled concerns over political activities, freedom of movement and access to displaced communities as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 elections.
