Erling Haaland once again proved why he remains one of the most feared strikers in European football as Manchester City opened their 2026/27 UEFA Champions League campaign with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão.
The Norwegian striker scored twice in the second half to settle a tense encounter and give new Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca a winning start in Europe’s elite competition. The result also extended City’s perfect start under Maresca, with the English side winning all four of their opening matches under the Italian coach.
Porto entered the contest with plenty of confidence after winning their opening five Primeira Liga matches, while the atmosphere inside the Dragão was electric. City, however, gradually grew into the game and began creating the more dangerous opportunities.
Phil Foden came close early on when he switched flanks and accelerated into space, creating an opportunity for Haaland. The Norwegian met the delivery with a header, but Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa produced an important save to keep the score level.
Haaland was presented with another chance soon afterwards when Antoine Semenyo delivered from the opposite side, but his header flew over the crossbar. City continued to apply pressure, with Foden, Rayan Cherki and Haaland all testing the Porto defence.
Despite City’s attacking pressure, Porto remained dangerous whenever they broke forward. André Silva came close to opening the scoring when he found space before firing an effort that went narrowly wide.
The first half ended goalless, but the match was not without controversy. Tempers flared as the teams headed towards the tunnel after Porto’s Gabriel Veiga was left requiring attention following a collision with City’s Marc Guéhi. Manchester City captain Rúben Dias was involved in the heated exchange with Porto coach Francesco Farioli, creating an uncomfortable scene at halftime.
Whatever was said during the break appeared to wake City up.
Just two minutes into the second half, the visitors finally found the breakthrough. In the 47th minute, Rayan Cherki worked his way into the Porto penalty area before finding Enzo Fernández. The Argentine midfielder delivered a dangerous ball into the box, and Haaland rose above the Porto defence to power a header into the net.

The goal changed the complexion of the game. Porto were forced to push forward in search of an equaliser, while City looked increasingly dangerous on the counterattack.
The hosts came close to restoring parity, but City’s defence managed to survive several dangerous moments. Maresca responded by making changes after the hour mark, bringing on Elliot Anderson and Iliman Ndiaye as City attempted to gain greater control of the midfield and attack.
Porto continued to threaten, but City’s experience at the highest level began to show. Haaland remained a constant threat, stretching the Porto defence and creating space for his teammates.
City thought about a second goal on several occasions. Ndiaye had an opportunity after skipping across the pitch, while Foden also tried to exploit space behind the Porto defence. However, Diogo Costa kept his side alive.
With Porto committing players forward, the danger of a City counterattack increased. Eventually, the visitors delivered the decisive blow.
In the 90+1st minute, Haaland scored his second goal of the night to kill off Porto’s hopes of a comeback. Rayan Aït-Nouri kept possession alive on the left before the ball was squared into Haaland’s path. The striker made no mistake, calmly guiding his right-footed effort into the far corner.
The goal sparked celebrations among the travelling City supporters and completed another memorable European night for Haaland.
The Norwegian’s brace also moved him to 167 goals for Manchester City, placing him third on the club’s all-time scoring list. He also reached 59 Champions League goals in just 59 appearances, highlighting his extraordinary efficiency on Europe’s biggest stage.
There was still time for more drama. In stoppage time, Haaland became involved in a heated confrontation with Porto’s Pablo Rosario. The incident briefly sparked a melee involving players from both teams, with Haaland and Rosario both receiving yellow cards.
Despite the late tension, City held their nerve to secure a valuable away victory.
For Maresca, the result was another important step in his early Manchester City reign. For Haaland, it was another reminder that when the Champions League spotlight shines brightest, he knows exactly how to deliver.
