Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has sparked discussion after revealing that his wife’s genotype was an important consideration before their marriage.
The singer said he would not have married his wife if she had an SS or AS genotype, explaining that she is AA.
Adekunle Gold said his decision was influenced by concerns about the possible health implications for children when certain genotype combinations are involved.
“I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS or AS. She’s AA,” the singer said.
He added that he did not believe it made sense to knowingly have children when there could be a risk of serious inherited health conditions.
Genotype compatibility has long been a subject of discussion among couples in Nigeria, particularly because sickle cell disease can occur when a child inherits certain haemoglobin variants from both parents.
However, the singer’s comments reflect his personal approach to marriage and family planning and should not be interpreted as medical advice.
Adekunle Gold and his wife, singer Simi, have been married since 2019 and have one daughter together.
His remarks have since renewed conversations online about genotype testing before marriage and the decisions couples make when considering their future children.
