The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Obi has said the party will set up a system to transmit results from polling units to its own situation room during the 2027 general election.
Obi made the revelation while speaking during an interview on Arise Television.
The former governor of Anambra State said the system would ensure that results from each polling unit are accurately transmitted, preventing the introduction of results that were not recorded at the polling units.
“We must make sure that at every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly, and we will even have a dual transmission so that as it is going to the proper, designated INEC portal, it is also being transmitted where the people can see it,” Obi said.
“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our own situation room the correct results. And I’m sure there are many other agencies that intend to do the same.
“So we are not going to have a situation where somebody just pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit. Our task is to make sure that the right things are done.”
Obi said the election must be free and transparent, adding that the contest is “not about parties” but “people versus the government”.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) uploads polling unit results to its result viewing portal (IReV), an online platform that allows voters, political parties, candidates, observers and other stakeholders to independently view scanned copies of result sheets as they are uploaded.
Before the 2023 election, INEC had assured Nigerians that polling unit results would be uploaded to the portal in real time.
However, during the elections, the portal remained inactive for an extended period, even after voting was concluded at some polling units, prompting suspicion from many Nigerians.
