LONDON, ENGLAND — Riccardo Calafiori has officially been named Arsenal’s Men’s Player of the Month for August, capping an outstanding start to the 2026-27 campaign for the Italy international defender, who has quickly established himself as an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Calafiori received 74 per cent of the supporters’ votes after registering one goal, two assists, and three clean sheets across Arsenal’s opening three matches. His impressive statistics reflect the impact he has made at both ends of the pitch since the season began, combining defensive solidity with attacking productivity from his position on the left side of defence.
The Italian defender made an immediate impact in the Community Shield against Manchester City in Cardiff, opening the scoring after just 23 seconds in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory. The goal set the tone for what has been a remarkable start to the season for the Gunners, who have looked imperious in the early weeks of the campaign.
Calafiori continued his strong form in the Premier League opener against Coventry City, providing the assist for Kai Havertz to score Arsenal’s first league goal of the season in another 3-0 victory. Ten days later, he played a key role again during Arsenal’s trip to Aston Villa, creating the opportunity for Bukayo Saka to score the winning goal in a hard-fought 1-0 victory.
His consistent performances earned him a convincing win in the club’s monthly voting, with Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Magalhães the other players competing for the award. The recognition is a testament to Calafiori’s growing influence within the squad and his ability to deliver in key moments.
Calafiori has started the season as Arsenal’s preferred option on the left side of defence, with his performances proving particularly important while Piero Hincapié waits for his opportunity and Jurrien Timber continues his recovery from groin surgery. The defender’s form has given Arteta valuable selection flexibility and competition for places in a demanding season.
The award covers Arsenal’s matches played in August, with the club’s September victories over Chelsea and Napoli therefore not included. Odegaard scored the decisive goals in both of those matches, underlining the strong contributions being made across the squad.
With Arsenal facing defensive concerns ahead of their trip to Sunderland, Calafiori’s early-season contribution provides another positive for Mikel Arteta. His combination of defensive reliability and attacking involvement has made him an important part of the team’s strong start, and his recognition as Player of the Month reflects the high regard in which he is held by the Arsenal faithful.
