Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged United States President Donald Trump to impose fresh sanctions on Russia over its deadly attacks on Ukraine.
Zelensky made the call on Friday while speaking at the Yalta European Strategy forum.
“Sanctions need to be imposed now,” he said, questioning why decisions on the measures could not be made more quickly.
The Ukrainian president said he planned to meet Trump in late September as Washington continues efforts to end the four-and-a-half-year war.
Zelensky also called for a truce covering Russian and Ukrainian attacks on energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
He warned that Ukraine would respond if Russia attacked its energy facilities.
“Russia knows that if they strike… they will receive the same in return,” Zelensky said.
Russia and Ukraine have stepped up long-range attacks in recent months, while US-led negotiations aimed at ending the war remain deadlocked.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a Russian drone strike on a petrol station in Kyiv early Friday killed two people and injured four others.
Zelensky’s call comes as pressure mounts on Washington to take tougher measures against Moscow and push both sides towards a ceasefire.
