DUTSE, NIGERIA — The Peoples Democratic Party in Jigawa State has constituted a 45-member campaign council for the 2027 governorship election, with its candidate, Mustapha Sule Lamido, charging members to work tirelessly to deliver victory for the party.
The campaign council, unveiled on Saturday at the PDP state secretariat in Dutse, comprises seasoned politicians, party stalwarts, and grassroots mobilisers drawn from across the state’s 27 local government areas. The council is chaired by a former state chairman of the party, with the state PDP chairman serving as co-chairman and a seasoned administrator as the Director-General of the campaign.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Lamido, who is the son of former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido, expressed confidence in the ability of the council to deliver the party’s message to every ward and polling unit in the state. He said the 2027 election was a defining moment for Jigawa and that the PDP was determined to return to power to restore the state’s lost glory.
“The people of Jigawa have suffered enough. They deserve a government that is responsive, accountable, and committed to their welfare. This campaign council is a team of tested and trusted individuals who will take our message of hope and renewal to every corner of the state,” Lamido stated.
The Director-General of the campaign council, Alhaji Bello Suleiman, said the council had already mapped out strategies to engage voters at the grassroots level, including town hall meetings, door-to-door campaigns, and the use of traditional and social media platforms. He assured that the campaign would be issue-based and conducted with decorum, in line with the party’s commitment to peaceful elections.
“We are not going to engage in politics of bitterness, thuggery, or violence. We will campaign on the strength of our ideas and the credibility of our candidate,” Suleiman said. “The people of Jigawa know the difference between the PDP and the ruling party. They know that the PDP is the only party that can deliver good governance and development.”
The state PDP chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Musa, said the party was united behind Lamido’s candidacy and that all aggrieved members from the recent primaries had been reconciled. He urged party faithful to shun divisive tendencies and work together for the success of the party in 2027.
“We have put our house in order. There is no faction in Jigawa PDP. We are one family, and we are focused on the task ahead,” Musa stated.
The inauguration of the campaign council comes amid heightened political activity in Jigawa State ahead of the 2027 elections. Lamido will face the incumbent governor, Umar Namadi of the All Progressives Congress, in what is expected to be a closely contested election. The PDP candidate has been touring the state’s local government areas, consulting with stakeholders and presenting his manifesto, which focuses on agricultural development, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment.
The campaign council has been tasked with implementing a comprehensive electoral strategy, including voter education, mobilisation, and the protection of the party’s votes on election day. The PDP said it was confident of victory, citing what it described as the mass disillusionment of Jigawa residents with the APC-led administration. The party said it would present a credible alternative and deliver the dividends of democracy to the people if elected.
