Brighton & Hove Albion produced a dominant display at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Sunday, sweeping aside Coventry City 5-0 in the Premier League as Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off during a difficult afternoon for Frank Lampard’s side.
The victory lifted Brighton into fourth position with seven points from four matches, while Coventry remained rooted to the bottom of the table without a point or a goal after four consecutive defeats since returning to the Premier League. The result also underlined the growing attacking confidence around Fabian Hürzeler’s Brighton side.
Coventry began the match with some attacking intent and created opportunities through Jack Rudoni, Ephron Mason-Clark and Awoniyi, but Brighton gradually took control of the contest.
Bart Verbruggen was forced into several important saves during the opening period, including efforts from Mason-Clark, Rudoni and Frank Onyeka. Awoniyi also had an opportunity in the 21st minute after being played in by Rudoni, but his effort went wide.
Brighton eventually broke the deadlock in the 35th minute. Pascal Groß provided a headed pass into the path of Charalampos Kostoulas, who controlled the opportunity before firing a right-footed effort into the bottom-left corner to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The goal gave Brighton greater confidence and they finished the first half in front, despite Coventry continuing to search for a way back into the match.
Brighton doubled their advantage just four minutes after the restart. Malick Yalcouyé received the ball from Maxim De Cuyper and finished with his right foot into the bottom-left corner in the 49th minute.
The second goal was followed by a major setback for Coventry. Awoniyi was shown a straight red card in the 53rd minute for violent conduct after an incident involving Brighton defender Maxim De Cuyper, reducing Coventry to 10 men with more than half an hour still to play.
Playing against 10 men, Brighton began to find even more space and pressure around the Coventry penalty area. Their third goal arrived from the penalty spot in the 70th minute after Bobby Thomas fouled Kostoulas inside the box.
Gross stepped up and confidently converted the penalty into the bottom-right corner to make it 3-0. The goal was another significant contribution from the German midfielder, who also provided the assist for Brighton’s opener.
Coventry’s problems became even worse in the closing stages when Brighton captain Lewis Dunk produced one of the highlights of the afternoon.
Dunk received the ball outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful right-footed strike from long range in the 83rd minute. The effort flew into the top-left corner, giving goalkeeper Carl Rushworth no chance and putting Brighton four goals ahead.
It was a spectacular finish from the experienced defender and capped a commanding performance from Brighton at both ends of the pitch.
There was still time for Brighton to add another goal. Yasin Ayari completed the rout in the fourth minute of stoppage time, curling a right-footed effort from outside the box into the bottom-right corner after being picked out by Groß.
The assist was particularly notable for Groß, who registered his 50th Premier League assist with the final pass.
Brighton finished the match with 69 per cent possession and seven shots on target, compared with Coventry’s 31 per cent possession and six shots on target. The visitors also recorded a superior expected goals figure of 2.69 against Coventry’s 1.39.
Brighton completed 513 accurate passes at a 90 per cent accuracy rate, compared with Coventry’s 175 passes at 71 per cent. The Seagulls also created two big chances against Coventry’s one and made their greater control count on the scoreboard.
For Coventry, the defeat deepened an already worrying start under Lampard. The newly promoted side have now lost all four Premier League matches without scoring a single goal, leaving them bottom with a minus-10 goal difference.
For Brighton, however, the result represents another important step forward. Their five-goal haul took them to seven points and a plus-eight goal difference after four league matches, strengthening their position among the early pace-setters.
The Seagulls will now look to carry their momentum into their next Premier League fixture against Manchester United, while Coventry must quickly regroup before facing Aston Villa in the EFL Cup.
