The United States Supreme Court has rejected the Trump administration’s request to allow the Postal Service to enforce new restrictions on mail-in ballots ahead of the November congressional midterm elections.
The justices’ decision on Monday came after North Carolina and Alabama had begun mailing thousands of ballots to voters, while several other states were preparing to start their mail-in voting processes.
The ruling followed last-minute legal challenges over whether states would be required to change their election plans after months of preparation for the November 3 midterm elections.
Republicans are defending their slim majority in Congress in the elections.
The Trump administration had asked the Supreme Court to intervene and clear the way for the new restrictions, but the justices declined to do so.
The decision means the states can continue with their existing arrangements for mail-in voting as the midterm elections draw closer.
