A 15-year-old girl identified as Amarachi has been rescued after she was allegedly locked inside a toilet for several months by her employers in Abuloma, Rivers State.
Amarachi, who is said to be from Ebonyi State, was reportedly living with a couple, identified as Eze Simeon and his wife, where she worked as a domestic help.
According to reports, the teenager was allegedly locked inside the toilet as punishment after she was accused of committing an offence.
She was reportedly subjected to severe neglect during the period she was allegedly confined, with claims that she was fed only once a day and given leftover food.
The teenager was eventually rescued on Monday, September 15, after she reportedly raised an alarm when the couple left the house.
Her cries for help attracted the attention of neighbours, who reportedly became concerned about her situation and contacted the police division in Abuloma.
Following the report, police officers were said to have immediately proceeded to the residence, where they reportedly found and rescued the teenager.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged confinement, including what offence the girl was accused of committing and how long she had allegedly been kept inside the toilet, are expected to form part of investigations.
The incident has also raised concerns over the treatment of domestic workers, particularly minors, and the responsibility of adults who employ children in private homes.
