Liverpool have been drawn against Chelsea in one of the biggest fixtures of the Carabao Cup fourth round, while Arsenal will travel to Fleetwood Town after the last-16 draw was conducted on Wednesday.
The draw has produced several interesting meetings, including three all-Premier League ties and a number of fixtures that will give lower-league clubs the opportunity to test themselves against top-flight opposition.
Liverpool’s meeting with Chelsea is arguably the headline fixture of the round. The two Premier League sides will meet at Anfield as they continue their pursuit of domestic silverware.
Liverpool booked their place in the fourth round after defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 in their previous fixture. The Reds produced a convincing performance to overcome Spurs and set up another difficult cup encounter.
Chelsea also progressed in style, beating Leeds United 6-3 in a nine-goal contest. The victory ensured the London club’s place in the last 16 and immediately set up a high-profile meeting with Liverpool.
The fixture at Anfield will therefore bring together two teams with strong ambitions in the competition, with only one able to advance to the quarter-finals.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have been handed a very different challenge.
The Gunners will travel away from home to face Fleetwood Town, giving the lower-league side one of the biggest fixtures in its recent history. Arsenal reached the fourth round after defeating Ipswich Town 4-2, while Fleetwood secured their place after beating Sheffield United 1-0.
The Fleetwood tie will provide Arsenal with another opportunity to negotiate a cup fixture against opposition from outside the Premier League. For Fleetwood, however, the occasion will be about much more than simply progressing to the next round, as hosting Arsenal represents a major moment for the club and its supporters.
There are also several all-Premier League matches in the draw.
Everton will host Newcastle United in another meeting between two established top-flight sides. Both clubs will have to produce a strong performance if they are to keep their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals alive.
Sunderland have also been handed a Premier League opponent, with Brentford set to visit the Stadium of Light.
Fulham and Crystal Palace will meet in another all-Premier League contest, while Bournemouth will host Aston Villa in what promises to be another closely contested tie.
The remaining fixture involving Manchester City is dependent on the outcome of their outstanding third-round match against Norwich City.
The winner of Manchester City’s tie with Norwich will host Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round, meaning Brighton already know they will face a difficult away fixture regardless of which team progresses from the outstanding contest.
The complete Carabao Cup fourth-round draw is:
Fleetwood Town vs Arsenal
Manchester City or Norwich City vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Everton vs Newcastle United
Sunderland vs Brentford
Liverpool vs Chelsea
Bradford City vs Peterborough United
Fulham vs Crystal Palace
Bournemouth vs Aston Villa
The fourth-round fixtures are scheduled to take place during the week commencing October 26, with the winners booking their places in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
For Liverpool and Chelsea, the draw has immediately created one of the most anticipated matches of the round. Both clubs will know that there is little room for error in a knockout competition where one poor performance can end a team’s hopes of lifting the trophy.
Arsenal will enter their meeting with Fleetwood as the higher-ranked side, but the Gunners will still need to approach the match seriously. Cup competitions have repeatedly produced surprises, particularly when lower-league teams are given the opportunity to play at home against Premier League opposition.
The other fixtures also offer plenty of intrigue, particularly the meetings involving Everton, Newcastle, Sunderland, Brentford, Fulham, Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Aston Villa.
With 16 teams now remaining in the competition, the fourth round represents another important step towards the final stages of the Carabao Cup.
Attention will now turn to the confirmation of the individual dates and kick-off times, before the clubs begin preparing for their respective last-16 assignments.
For supporters, however, the key fixtures are already clear. Liverpool will host Chelsea in the standout tie, while Arsenal’s trip to Fleetwood has the potential to produce one of the round’s most memorable cup occasions.
