The United States has announced an additional $267m in aid to support efforts to contain the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The US State Department announced the funding on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to the department, the latest funding brings total direct US health and humanitarian assistance for the Ebola response to $887m.
“To date, the United States government has provided $887 million in direct health and humanitarian assistance to combat the Ebola outbreak,” the State Department said.
The department also called on other countries with the capacity to provide assistance to increase their contributions to the response.
The announcement came after outgoing UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed last month for an additional $1.1bn to support efforts to contain the epidemic.
According to Doctors Without Borders, the outbreak continues to spread to new areas of the DRC.
Congolese public health officials said the outbreak has killed more than 3,600 people and infected about 7,500 since mid-May, making it the country’s deadliest recorded Ebola epidemic.
The US said it remained the largest aid provider for the latest outbreak and would continue supporting health and humanitarian efforts to contain the disease.
