ENUGU, NIGERIA — The Enugu State Government has suspended His Royal Majesty, Igwe Eze William Ezugwu, the traditional ruler of Ibagwa Ogbozalla Opi Autonomous Community in Nsukka Local Government Area, barely three weeks after he hosted Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate Peter Obi at his palace.
The suspension was contained in a letter dated September 24, 2026, with reference number MCM/CM/685/14, signed by the Commissioner for Chieftaincy Affairs, Dr. Charles O. C. Egumgbe. The government cited “flagrant violation of extant provisions of the Traditional Rulers Law Cap 151, Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2004.”
According to the letter, the monarch was suspended for failure to subscribe to the community’s Code of Conduct, failure to put in place a cabinet to help run the affairs of the autonomous community since its creation four years ago, and failure to encourage the setting up of a Town Union Executive, thereby running the community single-handedly.
The government also accused the traditional ruler of “persistent conducts inconsistent with section 15 (d), (e), (f), (g), (h), (i), (j) and (n) of the Traditional Rulers Law, Enugu State,” as well as “acts of intimidation, harassment and arrest of your subjects,” which it said had the potential to plunge the community into an avoidable crisis.
The suspension takes effect immediately, and the government said it was exercising its powers pursuant to sections 10(a) and 10(b) of the Traditional Rulers Law of Enugu State.
The timing of the suspension has generated widespread speculation, coming just weeks after Igwe Ezugwu hosted Peter Obi at his palace in Opi on September 5, 2026, where the traditional ruler reportedly prayed for and blessed the former Anambra governor’s presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 election.
A social media influencer, ‘Sen’ Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, was among the first to link the suspension to Obi’s visit, posting on Facebook: “After opposition visit to his palace, HRH Igwe Willy Ezugwu got suspended by the Enugu State Government, citing violation of laws by the monarch. Remember Mr. Peter Obi visited him two weeks ago at his palace in Opi Nsukka.”
However, Commissioner Egumgbe has dismissed any connection between the suspension and Obi’s visit, describing such claims as mischievous. “Why do you people want to politicise everything? You saw a letter and you are telling me about Peter Obi. I am a founding chairman of PDP in Enugu State, 1998/1999. I have a PhD in law. So, please don’t go and infuse a different thing from what you have seen there,” he said.
He noted that another traditional ruler in Mmaku community had also received a warning letter for similar conduct, adding that the government would not hesitate to take action against any traditional ruler who violates the law.
The suspension is the latest in a series of disciplinary actions taken by the Enugu State Government against traditional rulers in recent months. In July 2026, the government suspended three traditional rulers and four Presidents-General from Ezeagu Local Government Area over alleged misconduct bordering on security infractions, and in late July, Igwe Christopher Nyia of Obeagu Ugwuaji Autonomous Community was suspended over a communal crisis.
Political observers have noted that the suspension of Igwe Ezugwu has renewed questions among opposition circles over whether political considerations may be influencing actions against traditional rulers who openly associate with opposition figures. The Enugu State Government has, however, maintained that its actions are strictly administrative and in line with the state’s Traditional Rulers Law.
