ASABA, NIGERIA — The Delta State Police Command has arrested one suspect and launched a manhunt for two others in connection with the death of a Deputy Director of Education in the state’s Ministry of Education, Mrs. Unity Adeda.
The Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing at the Command headquarters in Asaba. He said the arrest followed a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the educationist, whose body was found in her residence in Asaba on September 18, 2026.
According to the Commissioner, preliminary investigations revealed that the deceased may have been killed by persons known to her, including her domestic aides. He said the police had identified three suspects, one of whom had been arrested, while two others were still at large.
“We have arrested one suspect in connection with the death of Mrs. Unity Adeda, a Deputy Director of Education in the Delta State Ministry of Education. Two other suspects, who are believed to be her domestic aides, are currently at large, and we are doing everything possible to apprehend them,” Olufemi stated.
The Commissioner said the arrested suspect had provided useful information that was helping the police to track down the fleeing aides. He said the police had recovered some items from the scene of the crime, which were being analysed as part of the investigation.
“We have recovered some items from the scene, and our forensic team is analysing them. We are also working with other security agencies to ensure that the fleeing suspects are arrested and brought to justice,” he said.
The Commissioner said the police were treating the case as a murder investigation, adding that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations. He urged members of the public with useful information on the whereabouts of the fleeing suspects to come forward, assuring that their identities would be protected.
“We appeal to members of the public to provide us with any useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing suspects. We assure you that your information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. We will not rest until all those involved in this heinous crime are brought to justice,” Olufemi said.
The deceased, Mrs. Unity Adeda, was a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Education. She was reportedly found dead in her residence at the Government Reservation Area in Asaba, with signs of violence on her body. The incident sparked shock and grief in the state’s education sector, with colleagues and friends of the deceased calling for a thorough investigation.
The Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Teachers in Delta State, Mr. Emmanuel Ogbogbo, expressed sadness over the death of Mrs. Adeda, describing her as a dedicated and hardworking professional. He urged the police to ensure that those responsible for her death were brought to justice.
“The death of Mrs. Adeda is a great loss to the education sector in Delta State. She was a dedicated and hardworking professional who was committed to the development of education in our state. We urge the police to ensure that her killers are arrested and prosecuted,” Ogbogbo said.
The Delta State Government has also expressed shock over the incident and pledged to support the police in their investigation. The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Ngozi Onyeakusi, described the late Adeda as a “valuable asset” to the ministry and said the government would do everything possible to ensure that justice was served.
As the investigation continues, the police have intensified efforts to arrest the two fleeing suspects. For now, the family and colleagues of the deceased are mourning the loss of a dedicated educator, while the police continue their hunt for those responsible for her death.
