LAGOS, NIGERIA — Lagos State University has announced the commencement of applications for the 2026/2027 Nigerian Education Loan Fund student loan. The scheme gives eligible students an opportunity to apply for financial support.
The university announced the development in a notice published on its official website on September 26, 2026. It directed students who meet the requirements to complete their applications within the approved period.
Application Window
According to the university, the application window opened on Wednesday, September 23, 2026. It will remain open until Thursday, December 31, 2026.
Who Can Apply
The loan application is open to registered LASU students. They must meet the requirements specified for the 2026/2027 application cycle.
Applicants need valid and properly linked student and identification information. This includes their JAMB registration number, National Identification Number, and Bank Verification Number.
LASU advised students to ensure their academic records on the university portal are accurate and up to date. They should verify details including their matriculation numbers, departments, and other relevant academic information.
Verify JAMB Information
The university urged applicants to confirm the accuracy of their JAMB information before starting the application. LASU warned that discrepancies could cause delays or affect eligibility.
Students who encounter difficulties should seek assistance. They can contact the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology or the Directorate of Special Interventions.
How to Apply
Students can begin the application process through the official NELFUND Student Loan Portal. The portal provides a registration process. This includes verification of Nigerian citizenship, educational information, and student status through JAMB.
NELFUND’s official platform states that applicants should first register on the portal. They should select the option to request a student loan. They should then complete the required steps and submit the application for review.
Following successful verification, NELFUND pays approved institutional charges to the institution. The upkeep component is paid into the bank account provided by the student.
The NELFUND portal describes the facility as an interest-free loan. Repayment begins two years after completion of the National Youth Service Corps programme.
Application Deadline
LASU students have until December 31, 2026 to submit their applications. The institution encouraged eligible students to complete the process within the stipulated period.
Students should also ensure their personal, JAMB, and academic information is correctly updated before applying. They are advised to use the official NELFUND platform and avoid unofficial websites.
NELFUND Student Loan Initiative
The student loan programme is administered by NELFUND under the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2024. NELFUND says the initiative provides zero-interest loans to eligible Nigerian students. The loans help cover institutional charges and upkeep.
LASU’s announcement provides students with a defined application window. The process will remain open for more than three months. Eligible students should verify their records and submit their applications before the deadline.
